USMNT Strikers Clash in Fierce Fight for 2026 World Cup Roster Spots

The 2026 World Cup is drawing ever nearer, with U.S. men's national team head coach Mauricio Pochettino preparing to unveil his official squad at the close of this month, naming the players who will realize their dreams of competing on soccer's grandest stage — and doing so on home turf.

While Pochettino has had to navigate numerous injury concerns among his player pool, the Argentine tactician must be thoroughly delighted with the state of one specific position in the USMNT setup: the striker role.

AS Monaco's Folarin Balogun, Coventry City's Haji Wright, and PSV Eindhoven's Ricardo Pepi are all enjoying the finest form of their careers at the No. 9 spot, each doing everything within their power to convince Pochettino why they alone deserve the starting berth for the Stars and Stripes this summer.

It has evolved into quite the forward battle, and Pochettino may find it difficult to determine who is most deserving — a headache he'll gladly welcome.

Three Scoring Machines

It was a particularly fruitful Saturday for two of the three strikers, competing across their respective leagues.

Folarin Balogun

Folarin Balogun

Balogun, renowned for his relentless pressing and blistering pace, notched his 11th goal in 11 matches across all competitions, firing a low, driven effort from just inside the 18-yard box in the 61st minute to level the score in an eventual 2–1 victory over FC Metz in Ligue 1. He now has 19 goals for the season in total.

The 24-year-old New York City native has almost single-handedly kept Monaco in the hunt for European competition next season, with the club currently occupying sixth place in the Ligue 1 table. His remarkable run of form kicked off back in February, and Pochettino will be keen to see whether it holds through the remainder of Monaco's campaign.

Ricardo Pepi

Not only did Pepi register his fourth goal in three games on Saturday, but he did so with his trademark flair, powering home a header just 34 seconds into the clash against Ajax, reminding Pochettino that he cannot be so easily overlooked or overshadowed by Balogun.

The 23-year-old from El Paso, Texas now boasts 17 goals this season for PSV, continuing to surge offensively despite enduring a setback with a broken forearm back in January.

Haji Wright

Haji Wright

Although Wright didn't add to the scoring action on Saturday, he has still been making a compelling case of late, most notably highlighted by Coventry City's dominant Championship campaign and their automatic promotion to the Premier League for the 2026–27 season — a return to the top flight for the first time in 25 years.

The Sky Blues' leading scorer — named to the Championship team of the season just two weeks ago — has tallied 17 goals in total, many defined by his adaptability and explosive yet composed finishing. He found the net as recently as April 21 in a 5–1 thrashing of Portsmouth. The 28-year-old Los Angeles native would be no poor selection for Pochettino either.

All three forwards are expected to feature in Pochettino's final squad announcement on May 26, though who will be handed the consistent starting role remains very much an open question.
