USMNT Takes on Belgium: Balogun Unleashed as Battle-Ready Lineups Revealed for World Cup Round of 16 Showdown

The U.S. men's national team is aiming to reach the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time since 2002 when it takes on Belgium in the round of 16 on Monday evening in Seattle.

Under the guidance of manager Mauricio Pochettino, the USMNT looks to build on the momentum from its 2–0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the round of 32, a match that has dominated U.S. mainstream coverage after star forward Folarin Balogun was shown a red card — a decision that has since been controversially overturned.

Belgium, meanwhile, advanced to the round of 16 following a remarkable comeback against Senegal in the round of 32. The Red Devils found themselves trailing in the 85th minute before netting two late goals and sealing the win with a 120th-minute strike to knock out the AFCON runners-up.

Both sides will draw energy from playing before Seattle's passionate crowd at Lumen Field, where the USMNT previously claimed a 2–0 victory over Australia in Group D, and where Belgium also secured their round of 32 triumph.

Balogun to Feature Amid Ongoing Controversy

Folarin Balogun

Balogun is set to start for the USMNT, having recently been cleared to play in what is arguably the most important USMNT match in a generation. He became the central figure in global football news when his round of 32 red card was suspended for one year. He was also handed a $40,000 fine.

He has scored three goals in as many matches this summer, leading the USMNT and winning over American fans with his clinical finishing in front of goal.

Away from the field, UEFA and several other international federations have voiced their displeasure with the ruling handed down by FIFA's Disciplinary Committee and the involvement of the White House and U.S. President Donald Trump in the matter. The Royal Belgian Football Association has stated it will be "exploring all available options," even after the final whistle of Monday's match, regardless of the outcome.
