USMNT Takes on Peru in International Friendly: What to Expect, Bold Predictions, and Starting Lineups

Nearly two months after the crushing 4–1 defeat to Belgium in the World Cup round of 16, the U.S. men's national team is set to return to the pitch, hosting Peru in the opening match of four games during the September–October international window. 

Under newly-extended head coach Mauricio Pochettino, the roster looks dramatically different from the World Cup squad, featuring 12 newcomers, including eight teenagers. Pochettino is ushering in a fresh chapter for the program as part of the long road to the 2030 World Cup.

Peru enters Saturday's encounter having failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, fielding a blend of experienced veterans and emerging talent. La Blanquirroja suffered a 3–1 defeat to eventual World Cup winners Spain in a pre-tournament friendly and claimed a victory over World Cup-bound Haiti, yet have not featured in the tournament since the 2018 World Cup in Russia. The win over Haiti is one of only two victories for Peru across their last 16 matches dating back to 2024.

Pochettino has been transparent about his desire to evaluate promising young players who could become central figures in the years ahead. 

With limited time to absorb the USMNT's tactical approach since departing their clubs for international duty, these newcomers will be thrust directly into the intensity of international competition. As gifted as 16-year-old Cavan Sullivan and his fellow youngsters have shown themselves to be, the weight of representing the Stars and Stripes at the senior level for the first time could prove far more daunting than anything they've encountered at club level. 

Against Peru, the USMNT should brace for a demanding physical challenge from a side accustomed to the grueling conditions that can shape matches in Orlando. At the same time, the USMNT lacks proven attacking options through the center, with a largely out-of-form 18-year-old Julian Hall potentially leading the attack. 

Given the extended window and more demanding fixtures against Mexico and Canada in the final two matches, there is room to absorb early errors in this opening game.

Pochettino signaled ahead of the match that he intends to be more experimental against Peru, aiming to preserve his strongest options for the tougher fixtures later in the window. With his focus on the team's long-term development and little riding on Saturday's result, expect a wave of young talents to earn their first caps. 

The manager's opening lineup is unlikely to remain intact for long, however. The USMNT and Peru have agreed to allow 11 substitutions per side, meaning up to 22 of the 28 rostered players could see action in a single match. 

On the right side of midfield, Sullivan could be handed an early opportunity, particularly given his outstanding form with the Philadelphia Union, where he has registered six goals and eight assists across his last eight appearances. Meanwhile, his club teammate, 6'5" Neil Pierre, could partner the experienced Miles Robinson at center back. 

In attack, a pair of Red Bull New York youngsters could spearhead the effort, with Adri Mehmeti operating in central midfield and looking to supply chances for his long-time academy and MLS teammate Hall up front. In defensive midfield, a more seasoned presence could feature, with Tyler Adams anchoring the position alongside Yunus Musah. The latter, despite carrying 2022 World Cup experience, had fallen out of Pochettino's plans before a recent revival at club side AC Milan.

With the volume of substitutions available, Pochettino could deploy an entirely overhauled lineup in the second half, or introduce changes earlier to probe the depth of his system.

MLS followers will spot several familiar names in Peru's expected lineup, with veteran Orlando City goalkeeper Pedro Gallese poised to start in goal. 

Overall, the South American side finds itself in a transitional phase following an early group-stage exit at the 2024 Copa América and failure to qualify for the World Cup. Manager Mano Menezes may lean on FC Copenhagen's Marcos López as a key contributor, along with 18-year-old Maxloren Castro, who has attracted interest from European clubs. 

Among the experienced names, Yoshimar Yotún and André Carrillo bring a combined 100-plus caps and will look to assert control in possession, while the tactical setup is expected to prioritize a compact and disciplined defensive structure. Meanwhile, Orlando midfielder Wilder Cartagena could inject creativity going forward.

The USMNT will face a stern examination against Peru's organized defensive block, but will gain valuable exposure to the competitive edge a South American opponent brings, even in a friendly setting.
