U.S. men's national team midfielder Sebastian Berhalter is reportedly closing in on a move from the Vancouver Whitecaps to EFL Championship club Middlesbrough following a standout World Cup campaign.
The 25-year-old, son of former USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter, is set to see his contract with the Whitecaps expire at the conclusion of the 2026 MLS season. Rather than extending his time in Canada, Berhalter is heading to Europe.
The Athletic reports that Middlesbrough are set to pay around $2 million to secure Berhalter's services in North Yorkshire this summer, rather than waiting for his deal to run out. As many as 10 clubs had shown interest in the MLS standout, but he is ultimately expected to link up with fellow American midfielder Aidan Morris at the Riverside Stadium.
The move follows Berhalter's impressive showing with the USMNT this summer. The midfielder appeared in all five of the Stars and Stripes' games at the 2026 World Cup, contributing a goal and an assist in his lone start against Türkiye.
Is Berhalter Ready to Take the Next Step?
While Berhalter is stepping into England's second division, the jump from Major League Soccer to European football remains a significant one. The Championship is a more demanding league than MLS, though it can serve as a launchpad for bigger opportunities down the line—provided the player can rise to the challenge. As a point of reference, England's Morgan Rogers built his reputation at Middlesbrough in 2023 and 2024 before sealing a $156 million move to Chelsea.
Berhalter, however, has shown he can perform when it matters. The 25-year-old established himself as one of MLS's premier midfielders last season, tallying eight goals and 13 assists during the Whitecaps' run to the MLS Cup final, where they were ultimately beaten by Inter Miami.
This season, Berhalter has picked up seamlessly from where he left off. He has already contributed seven goals and four assists across 18 appearances and is a key factor behind the Whitecaps sitting atop the Western Conference standings.
Whether Berhalter's ability will translate against the Championship's elite remains to be seen, but he is joining a capable squad that should aid his growth. Middlesbrough finished fifth in the table last season and reached the Championship playoff final, where they were edged out 1–0 by Hull City.
The club will once again set their sights on earning promotion to the Premier League, and Berhalter could prove to be a valuable asset in that pursuit.
A Damning USMNT Trend for Berhalter
Berhalter is poised to join a growing group of American players in the Championship. Alongside Morris, the likes of Patrick Agyemang, Haji Wright, Damion Downs, and George Campbell all compete in England's second tier. Josh Sargent also spent five seasons at Norwich City before making the switch to Toronto FC.
Yet among all those players, only Wright earned a spot in Mauricio Pochettino's World Cup roster, and the forward managed just two minutes of action for the USMNT during this summer's tournament.
By contrast, Pochettino called up eight MLS-based players to represent the host nation on the global stage.
Berhalter is taking a considerable gamble by leaving a league in which he is excelling for a tougher environment that has seemingly hampered other Americans' chances of featuring for the national team.
