USMNT's Tim Weah Dazzles Both on the Pitch and Behind the Piano Keys

U.S. men's national team standout Tim Weah is preparing for Saturday's friendly against Belgium, likely as part of his buildup to his second World Cup appearance with the national side this summer.

Beyond being an elite soccer player on the world's biggest stage, the 26-year-old is also a gifted musician and songwriter who envisions transitioning into the music industry once his playing career comes to an end.

Weah recently showcased his New Balance Furon v8 pink soccer cleats in an advertising campaign this week; however, the star wasn't shown dribbling or shooting. Instead, Weah appeared dressed in a sharp suit at a grand piano positioned at the center of the field, pressing the pedals with his cleated feet while delivering a seamless performance.

Tim Weah, the Artist

Music was a constant presence in Weah's upbringing, echoing throughout his childhood home. He was raised in Brooklyn, N.Y. by his Liberian father—soccer icon and 1995 Ballon d'Or recipient George Weah—and his Jamaican mother, Clar.

"My love of music came from my Jamaican-Liberian background," Weah told Sports Illustrated. "And just growing up in New York too, it's a melting pot of cultures and different styles of music, whether that's salsa, bachata, reggae or Afrobeats. It's all pretty much my culture. It's something I grew up on."

Weah's passion for music continued to deepen and now plays a meaningful role in his life away from the game.

"In middle school, I had the opportunity to play the violin and be in my first band. That was pretty much it," Weah added. "Music has been a part of me my whole life, and now I have the pleasure of songwriting with my best friend (Fleetzy), who is a full-time artist, so it's fun. It's always been a part of me."

Alongside French artist Fleetzy, Weah channels his creativity through an R&B style. Notably, Weah is also quite the vocalist, with nearly all of his former Juventus teammates naming him the club's best singer last year.

While music is largely an off-field passion, Weah does find ways to incorporate it into his soccer routine.

"I try to use it when I'm on the field too," he said. "It fits my vibe. It fits my energy, and it gets me going before games."

Weah has earned 47 caps for the USMNT since his senior debut in March 2018 at age 18, when he became the first player born in 2000 to feature for the team. Since then, he has contributed seven goals and five assists for the national side.

He was an integral figure in the USMNT's run to the round of 16 at the 2022 Qatar World Cup, netting the team's opening goal of the tournament in a 1–1 draw against Wales.

Weah recently joined Olympique de Marseille in Ligue 1 in July on a one-year loan from Juventus, where he spent the previous two seasons. He has made 22 starts for Marseille, returning to France's top division after claiming back-to-back Ligue 1 titles with Paris Saint-Germain in 2017–2018 and 2018–2019, and another championship with Lille in 2020–21.
