Van Dijk's Match-Winning Header Can't Hide Liverpool's Growing Concerns Against Sunderland

Liverpool made history as the first Premier League side to secure a victory at the Stadium of Light this campaign, earning a crucial 1-0 triumph thanks to Virgil van Dijk's decisive header in the second period.

The Reds aimed to narrow the distance to Manchester United and Chelsea after their Champions League rivals dropped points on Tuesday evening, but struggled to break down Sunderland's exceptionally organized defensive structure during a challenging first 45 minutes in wet and windy conditions at the Stadium of Light.

Liverpool showed little improvement in their attacking play from regular phases after the interval but found the breakthrough on 60 minutes when Van Dijk climbed highest from a corner kick to end the stalemate, with the ball finding the net via a deflection off Sunderland's Habib Diarra.

This vital victory places Liverpool just two points adrift of Chelsea and three behind Manchester United, bringing them back into contention for a top-five Premier League position—which should be sufficient for Champions League qualification.

Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo

Liverpool's difficulties against compact defensive setups this season are well-documented. Points lost against Leeds United (on two occasions), Burnley, Nottingham Forest and Sunderland highlight their challenges in penetrating resolute, deep-sitting defensive formations. Despite controlling Wednesday's encounter and securing three valuable points, they were largely ineffective in open play situations.

The Reds controlled proceedings during the opening period on Wearside but despite registering 14 attempts, they rarely threatened Robin Roefs's goal seriously. Florian Wirtz striking the frame was their most promising moment, with just two efforts finding the target, almost half their shots coming from distance and no clear-cut opportunities fashioned.

The struggles persisted following the break, though Liverpool did show slight improvement in chance creation quality. Nevertheless, without Van Dijk's commanding header, it would have represented another disappointing display from the attacking unit.

Their inability to create danger from the flanks amplified their creative struggles. The ongoing poor form of Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo compelled the Reds to channel attacks through central areas into crowded zones, depending on individual brilliance from Wirtz or Hugo Ekitiké—a recurring theme since the new year began.

While this significant victory deserves recognition, another lackluster offensive showing indicates Liverpool have yet to solve the puzzle of breaking down such defensive approaches.
