VAR Drama: Inside the Controversial Decision That Denied Arsenal's Penalty Against Newcastle
Arsenal and Newcastle United took center stage during Sunday's Premier League action, with VAR making an early impact on proceedings.
Around the 15-minute mark, Eberechi Eze attempted to locate Bukayo Saka with a high, arcing pass. Though Saka couldn't maintain control, a wayward back-pass toward Newcastle's Nick Pope was seized upon by Viktor Gyökeres. The Swedish striker attempted to round the goalkeeper but tumbled following contact between the pair.
Official Jarred Gillett paused momentarily before signaling and granting Arsenal a spot kick. However, an extended VAR examination led the referee to the pitchside monitor, ultimately resulting in the original call being reversed. The key question centered on whether Pope had touched the ball after Gyökeres' initial contact.
"Following the review, the Newcastle keeper touches the ball and no infringement occurred. The final ruling is a dropped ball," Gillett announced. The official also informed Declan Rice, audible due to an open microphone, that Pope managed to get his toe to the ball. The home crowd responded by chanting, "Same old Arsenal, always cheating."
Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville offered his analysis of the incident: "Viktor Gyökeres essentially kicks it into Nick Pope's feet. Pope has still obstructed Viktor Gyökeres. Gyökeres makes contact with the ball, then there's a touch, and then he brings him down afterward. I'm somewhat conflicted. I believe the referee is discussing it with Stockley Park."
Newcastle managed to break the deadlock in the 34th minute via Nick Woltemade following an inventive set-piece play.
Mikel Arteta has previously voiced his displeasure with VAR during a 2023 visit to St. James' Park, labeling it a 'disgrace.' This particular fixture has proven challenging overall, with the Gunners suffering defeat in three of their previous four visits to the venue.
