Viktor Gyokeres Reveals the Shocking Reason He Chose Arsenal Over Manchester United

Arsenal forward Viktor Gyökeres has revealed that Arsenal's strong interest in securing his signature made his decision to join the Emirates Stadium a straightforward one.

Gyökeres had made his intentions clear earlier in the year that he sought a transfer to a top-tier club during the summer window and quickly identified Arsenal as his preferred destination, though the Gunners had to endure prolonged and challenging negotiations with Sporting CP before finalizing the deal.

While these discussions continued, Manchester United made their own approach to Sporting in an attempt to orchestrate a reunion with head coach Ruben Amorim, yet Gyökeres remained committed to his Arsenal move.

"I could sense their genuine desire to bring me here," he explained to The Athletic regarding his motivation for choosing Arsenal. "Additionally, this is an enormous club with tremendous heritage. I simply felt a strong pull to join and become part of this organization.

"Naturally, other clubs showed interest too. However, I didn't find the decision particularly challenging."

Expectations were already high for Gyökeres following his remarkable record of 97 goals in 102 appearances for Sporting, but the pressure intensified when the Swedish striker was given the iconic No.14 jersey previously worn by Arsenal legend Thierry Henry. His new shirt sales are reportedly setting new club records.

"Certainly I'm aware of the jersey's significance," Gyökeres added. "However, truthfully, there weren't many numbers available to choose from. Since that one was free, it became an obvious selection once I learned about it.

"I don't really aim to draw comparisons with [Henry's] accomplishments during his time here. I simply want to focus on my own path and demonstrate my abilities. He was undoubtedly exceptional, but we're different types of players.

"I believe I place sufficient pressure on myself already. I'll simply focus on performing well, honestly. What others think or expect isn't really within my control."
