Vinicius Jr Breaks Silence on Contract Negotiations and His True Relationship With Mbappe

Vinicius Jr Breaks Silence on Contract Negotiations and His True Relationship With Mbappe

Vinicius Jr has reaffirmed his contentment at Real Madrid and made clear he feels no urgency to negotiate a new contract, even as his current deal enters its final year.

The Brazilian winger's future has been a subject of intense speculation in recent months. The 25-year-old previously attracted a massive financial offer from Saudi Arabia, and further exit rumors were fueled by his on-pitch meltdown during October's Clásico victory against Barcelona.

Vinicius Jr was furious at being hauled off midway through the second half by then-head coach Xabi Alonso and stormed toward the tunnel while yelling: "I'm done with this team! I'm leaving!"

The incident raised serious concerns, yet it was ultimately Alonso who departed in January. Vinicius Jr, for his part, later tried to dampen transfer speculation by expressing his desire "to stay in the team for many more years."

Nevertheless, with the 2025–26 campaign now concluded and the clock winding down on Vinicius Jr's deal—set to expire in the summer of 2027—no progress on a new agreement has been made.

Vinicius Jr Attempts to Cool Down Speculation

Speaking to Cazé TV, the Brazil international insisted he remains "calm" regarding the matter.

"I'm in no hurry to renew my contract," he said. "I have it until 2027. So, until 2027, we have a lot to discuss with Real Madrid, and Real Madrid has a lot to discuss with us.

"Real Madrid is calm, I'm calm. The president trusts me, and I trust him. And that's all, we just have to wait and live each day, each moment, and enjoy the best club in the world."

Vinicius Jr, who wore the captain's armband during Madrid's defeat to Barcelona earlier this month, also reflected on the privilege of being part of the club's leadership structure and emphasized that leaving is something he has never considered.

He said: "I've never imagined myself away from Real Madrid. I really enjoy every moment I spend here because it's my dream club. I always dreamed of playing here and being able to do so for so long. Now I'm one of the team's captains. Despite being so young, it's an important achievement that happens only a few times in history.

"So I'm enjoying every moment. I want to stay here for the rest of my life, but I'm not in a hurry to renew my contract."

Mbappé 'Friendship'

One of the most discussed storylines at Real Madrid this season has been the dynamic—or apparent lack of one—between Vinicius Jr and Kylian Mbappé.

Despite combining for more than 60 goals this season, the two star players have struggled to click in Madrid's forward line and are yet to win a single piece of silverware together.

Across all competitions in 2025–26, they found the net in the same match just six times. In the calendar year of 2026, they have linked up for a goal on only three occasions.

Reports have even surfaced of a dressing room power struggle between the pair, with one explosive claim suggesting that Mbappé's entourage believes Vinicius Jr has been feeding negative stories about him to the media.

Vinicius, however, has flatly denied any friction between them, describing the French forward as his "friend" and a "legendary player."

"Whenever we can, we're together, even off the field, doing things as friends," Vinicius Jr said. "I've always had a good relationship with him. I used to send him a lot of messages asking him to come and play with us.

"We haven't been able to play the way we want, to win the titles the fans want, but I think we'll be able to turn that situation around very soon. Mbappé is a good person; he always defends me in interviews, including after the match against Benfica regarding the racism incident. He's a legendary player who will leave his mark on Real Madrid."

Vinicius Jr Puts the Ball in Madrid's Court

The Brazilian's public comments effectively hand the initiative back to Real Madrid by reaffirming his loyalty and signaling to supporters that he is open to extending his stay.

The timing is also calculated, coming ahead of Real Madrid's upcoming presidential elections—with the Brazilian's contractual situation a pressing issue for candidates Florentino Pérez and Enrique Riquelme.

Contract discussions between the player and the club have been fraught, with The Athletic reporting that attempts to negotiate an extension date back to January 2025.

Vinicius Jr is reportedly pushing for wage parity with Mbappé—the club's top earner—along with performance bonuses and a signing bonus, as part of a package worth €30 million ($35 million) annually.

The report notes that "Madrid have shown no willingness whatsoever to meet Vinicius Jr's demands so far."

A trophy-free campaign compounded by off-field unrest has left Madrid navigating a summer of significant change, with reports also suggesting the club's financial resources may not be as abundant as in prior years.

Despite being jeered by sections of his own supporters on several occasions this season, Vinicius Jr remains one of Madrid's most prized assets, and allowing the 2024 Ballon d'Or runner-up to walk away for free—against the club's wishes—would represent a damaging outcome.

However, should Vinicius and Mbappé continue to struggle to build a productive partnership at the start of the new campaign and no agreement is reached, a resolution will need to be found.

With the French No. 9 virtually untouchable as a saleable asset, Madrid could find themselves weighing up their alternatives when it comes to Vinicius Jr.
