Vinicius Jr Breaks Silence on Real Madrid Future as Contract Rumors Swirl

Vinicius Jr Breaks Silence on Real Madrid Future as Contract Rumors Swirl

Vinicius Junior has expressed his desire to stay at Real Madrid for "a long time", describing the Spanish club as "the club of my dreams."

The 25-year-old Brazilian star joined the club back in 2018, with his current deal expiring in 2027. If no extension is agreed before then, he will be free to negotiate with interested clubs from January next year.

The possibility of a contract extension has fueled considerable speculation in recent months. Toward the end of 2025, reports emerged suggesting Vinicius Jr had informed club president Florentino Pérez that he was unwilling to continue in Madrid, during a turbulent spell under then-head coach Xabi Alonso.

Vinicius Jr found it difficult to build a working relationship with Alonso, with tensions reaching a low point during the El Clásico victory in October. The winger was taken off midway through the second half and reacted furiously, repeatedly shouting "Me?" upon seeing his number displayed on the fourth official's board.

"I'm leaving the team," he was heard saying as he walked directly to the locker room.

Vinicius Jr Insists 'We'll Take Care of Renewal'

The situation has improved significantly for Vinicius Jr since Alonso's departure in January. The attacker netted braces in consecutive matches against Manchester City and Atlético Madrid prior to the international break and continues to be a central figure under new boss Álvaro Arbeloa.

Speaking before Real Madrid's Champions League quarterfinal first leg loss to Bayern Munich, Vinicius Jr appeared to dismiss any talk of a move away, despite persistent links to the Saudi Pro League.

"I hope I can stay for a long time," he said on Monday.

"We're very calm because I have the president's trust. At the right moment, we'll take care of the renewal because this is the club of my dreams, and we'll continue together for many years."

Relationship With Alonso Was 'Difficult'

The former Flamengo star also opened up about his struggles under Alonso's management, acknowledging that the pair never truly clicked — an issue that does not exist with Árbeloa.

"I was getting game time, but not many minutes," Vinicius Jr said. "It was difficult, but every manager has their own approach, and I didn't connect the way he wanted.

"Still, it was a valuable experience, and I hope I can keep working with Árbeloa, because I have a great connection with him, and he has always given me confidence.

"Árbeloa has been very clear about what he expects from me," Vinícius added. "I went through a long spell without scoring. That happened when I wasn't in the right headspace, and I was very young. But I've grown from it. The best players always find a way back."

What Is Happening With Vinícius' Contract Talks?

According to The Athletic, Madrid first initiated renewal discussions with Vinicius Jr's representatives back in January 2025, but have so far been unable to reach an agreement.

Vinicius Jr, who claimed The Best FIFA award in 2024, is currently reported to earn €18 million ($21 million) net annually at Madrid, having previously turned down an offer that would have raised his salary to approximately €20 million ($23.4 million) after tax.

Interest from Saudi Arabia appears to have diminished in recent months, while Real Madrid are reportedly prepared to reject any offer below the player's €1 billion ($1.2 billion) release clause. Nevertheless, the clock is ticking for Florentino Pérez and the club's hierarchy.

Vinicius Jr's most recent comments suggest that a breakthrough in negotiations may be on the horizon.
