Vinicius Jr Turns Recruiter: Inside Story of How He Lured Two Galacticos to Real Madrid

Vinicius Junior has disclosed that he directly contacted both Kylian Mbappé and Jude Bellingham to "serve as [their] representative" prior to their moves to Real Madrid.

Bellingham made his way to the Spanish capital in 2023 for an impressive fee of €103 million ($111 million at that time) following extended speculation about a potential transfer to Liverpool throughout the window. Mbappé's signing 12 months later materialized after years of persistent rumors that were finally resolved when he allowed his Paris Saint-Germain contract to expire.

Throughout this prolonged recruitment phase, Vinicius Jr was consistently messaging Mbappé. "Each summer I would message him: 'When will you join us?' I served as his representative," he shared with Ibai Llanos during a comprehensive interview this week. "I took the same approach with Bellingham."

Vinicius Jr's motivation was clear: "I desire to compete alongside the finest players to improve our chances of success." However, the situation isn't always that simple.

Vinicius Jr's philosophy—that superior individual talent will invariably create a stronger team—represents the exact kind of misguided reasoning that has plagued both of Florentino Pérez's periods as Real Madrid president. After maneuvering his way to the summit of the club's power structure at the millennium's turn with a platform built on his pledge to acquire Luís Figo, Pérez began incorporating one of the globe's elite players to his squad each summer.

Figo and Zinedine Zidane were eventually accompanied by Ronaldo before David Beckham's signing in 2003 permanently disrupted the team's equilibrium. To manage the Manchester United academy product's salary, Pérez sold crucial defensive midfielder Claude Makélélé. "Why apply another coat of gold paint to the Bentley when you're losing the complete engine?" Zidane remarked. Madrid would capture only one Spanish Super Cup during the following three seasons before Pérez departed his position in 2006.

When he returned to leadership in 2009, the engineering executive began building another collection of Galácticos. Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaká and Karim Benzema formed the initial group before Madrid again discarded their engine in 2014, trading away the tireless Ángel Di María for the considerably less dynamic and productive James Rodríguez. Another period without trophies ensued.

Mbappé's signing risks becoming the most recent unnecessary enhancement implemented by Pérez. Coming off a remarkable league and Champions League double in 2024 with a traditional (though unfashionable) striker in Joselu providing the focal point for attacks, Madrid immediately secured the versatile Frenchman.

Although Mbappé's remarkable scoring statistics indicate personal success, the team has struggled to replicate their recent achievements—and both Carlo Ancelotti and Xabi Alonso have suffered consequences with their dismissals.

Vinicius Junior, specifically, appears to have been negatively affected by the transfer he advocated so strongly. With Mbappé naturally gravitating toward the left wing position he usually fills, the duo have demonstrated only occasional moments of coordination. Indeed, over the past two-and-a-half years, Vinicius Jr's scoring frequency has declined from approximately one every 155 minutes without Mbappé present compared to a rate of one every 223 with the Frenchman participating.

Paradoxically, their bond outside the Bernabéu is strong. Mbappé belongs to Vinicius Jr's inner circle in the locker room, alongside the French duo of Eduardo Camavinga and Ferland Mendy. "We share more time together than with our own families," the Brazilian observed. "We must maintain positive relationships." If only they could dedicate some of that time to discovering how to collaborate effectively.

Who's Next on Vinicius Jr's Recruitment List?

Should Vinicius Jr persist in his recruiting role, a defensively-oriented midfielder capable of managing game rhythm—a long-overdue successor to Toni Kroos—should head his priority list.

There exists a wealth of compelling prospects across Europe, with players like Stuttgart's Angelo Stiller or former Real Madrid youth product Chema Andrés presenting fascinating possibilities. Nevertheless, should Vinicius Jr want to satisfy his preference for marquee signings, there is one clear—and uncomfortable—phone call to make.

Rodri has remained on Real Madrid's target list for years. A decorated Spain international with the presence to control matches at football's highest level, his signing would be costly but potentially transformative. Regrettably, the 2024 Ballon d'Or recipient happened to be the subject of Vinicius Jr's frustration when he was controversially denied that prestigious honor.

The disappointed Brazilian and every Real Madrid representative planned to attend the Paris ceremony boycotted the function in objection. "Well, it's a choice of individuals or organizations in general to determine their actions," Rodri later commented. "I cannot respect the decision, I always stated I wouldn't handle it the same way."

A year and a half later, those disagreements should certainly have diminished. Vinicius Jr would undoubtedly hope so while anticipating on the other end of the call.
