Vinicius Junior's Shocking Red Card Suspension Rocks Real Madrid Before High-Stakes El Clasico Showdown

Real Madrid winger Vinícius Júnior has been handed a four-game suspension following his red card against Villarreal, ruling the Brazilian star out of a crucial Clásico that his team cannot afford to lose.

Vinícius Jr—along with the entire Bernabéu crowd—lived through a chaotic two-minute spell during Saturday's 1–0 victory. The No. 7, who began the match on the bench, entered as a substitute in the second half and netted his first goal since late August.

The celebration was short-lived, however, as a VAR review revealed Vinícius Jr tugging the hair of Villarreal midfielder Nathan Saliba. The 26-year-old then stormed toward the referee and had to be restrained by teammates before storming off down the tunnel in a furious outburst.

A straight red card for an off-ball incident already carries a two-match ban, but Vinícius Jr's conduct—classified as "aggressive"—added a further two matches to his punishment.

The forward will now be reduced to watching from the stands as Real Madrid clash with Barcelona for the first time this season, along with three other fixtures in the coming weeks.

The Matches Vinícius Jr Will Miss for Real Madrid

Real Madrid will have to face Sevilla this weekend without Vinícius Jr, in addition to Barcelona, Racing Santander, and Valencia. The final three of those fixtures are away from home, an area where the squad has found life difficult under José Mourinho this season.

Los Blancos' two losses came at Real Betis and Atlético Madrid, and they only narrowly claimed wins away at Espanyol and Elche. Toppling an unbeaten Barcelona side at the Camp Nou was already a daunting prospect—and without Vinícius Jr, it becomes even more so.

Mourinho's squad should manage to overcome a struggling Racing side and an even weaker Valencia outfit, but by the time those games arrive, they could already find themselves nine points adrift of Barcelona if they fall in El Clásico. The deficit could grow even larger should they drop points against a strong Sevilla side the week before.

The one bright spot is that Vinícius Jr remains eligible for Champions League matches. He featured against Roma on Wednesday and is expected to slot back into the starting XI when Real Madrid take on RB Leipzig and AEK Athens in European competition ahead of the November international break.

When Will Vinícius Jr Return to La Liga Action?

The four-match ban keeps Vinícius Jr sidelined in domestic competition until after the November international window. His next La Liga appearance is set for Sunday, Nov. 22, when Real Madrid host Celta Vigo.

This is merely the latest setback in what has been a troubled 2026–27 campaign for Vinícius Jr. The winger has managed just one goal in 10 appearances across all competitions—a strike against Real Sociedad on Aug. 26.

The international break offered little relief for the out-of-form No. 7. His only goal contribution across three matches for Brazil came via a penalty passed to him by Bruno Guimarães, who felt he needed a boost in "confidence."

The combination of poor output and such an unnecessary dismissal only heaps more pressure on Vinícius Jr, who must now sit on the sidelines and watch the exciting Yan Diomande attempt to stake his claim on the left wing.
