Virgil van Dijk Breaks Silence on Shocking Anthony Gordon Confrontation: "I Don't Understand"

Virgil van Dijk delivered a composed reaction to Anthony Gordon's dismissal following a studs-up challenge that raked down his leg during an intense clash between Newcastle United and Liverpool on Monday evening.

The away side's captain bore the brunt of a reckless tackle from the energetic home team's forward, which created visible marks along his lower leg. Gordon extended his hand in apology to Van Dijk, who couldn't help but smile slightly. The two players had a quick exchange of words while referee Simon Hooper was called to review the incident on the touchline monitor to determine whether the foul merited more than the initial caution.

After examination, Gordon received a direct red card and made his way off the field with reluctance. Following what developed into a thrilling 3–2 win for the away team, Van Dijk was questioned about his discussion with Gordon.

"I told him, 'If that's not worthy of a red card then I don't know football,'" the Liverpool leader disclosed. "It seemed odd to me that the referee needed to check the monitor. Sadly, these incidents occur in the game, whether intentional or not it took place, we continue forward."

Gordon used social media after the match to issue a public statement of regret. "I want to genuinely apologise to my team-mates and the supporters," he wrote. "My motives were honest. I was simply attempting to bring intensity to the match and I misjudged the challenge.

"I also want to apologise to Virgil. I would never deliberately tackle someone in this manner intentionally. We had a conversation afterwards and he understands that."

Newcastle skipper Bruno Guimarães came to his teammate's defense. "I believe he was trying to contribute excessively," the Brazilian explained. "I think at times when you're so eager to perform you commit errors.

"It's occurred to me as well. We consistently attempt to deliver our maximum effort. There's considerable external criticism that we have no influence over."
