Wayne Rooney Reveals Man Utd's Secret Weapon Behind Stunning Revival—With a Major Warning
Manchester United icon Wayne Rooney has identified the club's revival not through their attacking prowess, but rather the four-player "foundation" anchoring the team's structure.
Harry Maguire has featured in all three matches under Michael Carrick's leadership after returning from a thigh injury that kept him out since November, re-establishing his defensive partnership with Lisandro Martínez, who was absent for most of 2025 due to an ACL injury.
Ahead of this defensive duo, Carrick has chosen to reintegrate Kobbie Mainoo and partner him with Casemiro rather than Bruno Fernandes, who is now deployed in a more advanced role.
Rooney, during his eponymous BBC podcast, highlighted these four players—Maguire, Martínez, Mainoo and Casemiro—starting together as the "primary transformation" driving the team's enhanced performances.
"Determined, significantly more energy than we witnessed under the former manager … and it appeared they had a clear strategy. Amad was exceptional once more [against Fulham], along with [Diogo] Dalot," he commented.
"However, I believe the key modifications for Manchester United involve having Harry Maguire and Martínez, plus Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo positioned in front of [them]. Naturally, we can discuss Bruno, he's United's finest player. But I think having that foundation of those four has been vital."

Tactical approaches notwithstanding, Amorim seldom had his top two center-backs fit simultaneously. When Maguire rejoined the lineup against Manchester City, it marked his first appearance alongside Martínez in a traditional back four formation since September 2024—during Erik ten Hag's tenure.
While this was beyond Amorim's influence, it was equally his decision to marginalize Mainoo in favor of a Casemiro-Fernandes midfield combination.
Why Man Utd's New Core Can't Last
Why Man Utd's New Core Can't Last
Starting next season, at least one member of the essential quartet highlighted by Rooney will depart the club, while another's status remains uncertain.
Casemiro's upcoming summer exit upon contract expiration has been officially confirmed. The 33-year-old Brazilian midfielder, who is concluding his United tenure with an impressive campaign following his strong inaugural season in 2022–23, will say what's expected to be a heartfelt goodbye to supporters in May after it was verified he won't be extending his stay.
Additionally, Maguire's destination for the 2026–27 season and beyond remains undetermined. The defender is also set to become a free agent this summer and has yet to finalize new terms with the organization. While there's still opportunity to renew, departing without compensation remains a possibility.
United are actively seeking at least one new central midfielder ahead of next season, with primary targets including Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba and Adam Wharton.
A new center-back signing could materialize if Maguire departs, though Amorim's tactical system means there's an abundance of central defenders, including Matthijs de Ligt, Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven alongside Martínez in the roster. Academy product Tyler Fredricson is also considered a promising talent.
