Wayne Rooney's Jaw-Dropping Teen Wages Revealed: How the 16-Year-Old Sensation's Pay Stacks Up Against Rising Star Max Dowman
Wayne Rooney has disclosed that his weekly earnings amounted to merely $100 (in current currency) when he netted the iconic strike against Arsenal that introduced him to the global stage in 2002.
At 16 years and 360 days old, Rooney became the Premier League's youngest ever scorer. This milestone was surpassed by James Milner representing Leeds United just two months afterward, before fellow Everton prospect James Vaughan set an even lower benchmark in 2005.
Vaughan's record remained untouched for over two decades, until Max Dowman scored for Arsenal—coincidentally against Everton—merely 73 days past his 16th birthday.
In England, athletes under 17 are prohibited from signing professional deals and must stay on scholar agreements for students still attending school. During Rooney's era, the standard rate was $100. Currently, Dowman can receive up to $465.60 weekly—totaling $24,211 per year.
"When I found the net against Arsenal, I believe I was earning £75 ($100) per week," Rooney shared on his eponymous BBC podcast. "However, that occurred four days prior to my 17th birthday, so I remained a scholar [during the Arsenal match]. I would take loans from my parents until I secured my professional deal."

Everything transforms once a player reaches 17. A media report from that period indicated that after signing his initial professional agreement, Rooney's weekly earnings soared to $17,293 (in today's value)—nearly $900,000 per year. When he transferred to Manchester United from Everton at 18, Rooney was earning close to $3.5 million annually.
Such figures are incomprehensible for someone from humble beginnings who, by his own account, used to manipulate his travel reimbursement forms when joining England's youth squads. "I would locate the most distant location and claim that's where we traveled from," he chuckled.
Dowman, regarded as a once-in-a-generation prospect, is positioned for his own substantial salary increase when he marks his upcoming birthday on Dec. 31, 2026. Nevertheless, the devoted Arsenal supporter allegedly rejected offers of higher compensation from other clubs to remain faithful to the Gunners.
For now, though, slightly over $460 per week suits him perfectly.
