What's Next for the USMNT After Their World Cup Journey Ends?

As Belgium prepares for Friday's quarterfinal showdown with Spain at the 2026 World Cup, the U.S. men's national team faces a lengthy wait before reconvening, with a likely return to action in September.

Following a humiliating 4–1 defeat to Belgium in the round of 16, the USMNT must sit on the sidelines until friendlies and regional competitions resume, with significant uncertainty surrounding manager Mauricio Pochettino's future and the broader player pool.

Some USMNT players will be back in action as early as next week with their MLS clubs, while others won't return to the field until their European seasons kick off next month.

The next FIFA international window doesn't arrive until late September, opening Sept. 21 and running through Oct. 6, providing the chance to play four matches in either the Concacaf Nations League or friendlies. This marks the first time teams will participate in a four-match fall window, following FIFA's decision to merge the previously separate September and October two-game windows.

While the exact schedule remains unclear, the USMNT is expected to play a combination of friendly and competitive fixtures during that window.

When Are the Next Competitive USMNT Games?

Concacaf Nations League

The USMNT is set to participate in the Concacaf Nations League this fall, a secondary continental competition featuring national teams from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean; however, specific match dates and opponents have yet to be announced.

Concacaf will conduct the Nations League draw on July 23, which will reveal the USMNT's group stage opponents. The tournament wraps up with semifinals and a final scheduled for spring 2027. The USMNT placed fourth in the most recent Nations League in 2024-25, though the team claimed victory in the first three editions of the competition, which launched in 2019.

Regarding potential friendly opponents, the USMNT would likely be unable to face European sides, as UEFA intends to run a four-game Nations League window covering the entire international break. Those constraints would make Asian, African, or South American opponents the most probable choices, with Oceanian teams also remaining a possibility.
