Where Could Arsenal's Wonderkid Ethan Nwaneri Head Next? Top Transfer Destinations Revealed

Arsenal may be open to offloading teenage sensation Ethan Nwaneri in the upcoming summer transfer window, with growing speculation pointing toward a departure from the Emirates Stadium.

Nwaneri made history in 2022 by becoming the youngest player ever to feature for Arsenal across all competitions, as well as the youngest to appear in the Premier League for any club, at just 15 years and 181 days old. Both of those records have since been surpassed by Max Dowman.

However, the winger's progress has hit a wall this season. After receiving minimal playing time in the first half of the campaign and with Dowman emerging as competition, Nwaneri headed to Olympique Marseille on loan in January — only for the move to sour when manager Roberto de Zerbi departed the club shortly after.

Nwaneri has found it difficult under replacement boss Habib Beye — the former Aston Villa and Newcastle United fullback — and has managed just one Ligue 1 start since February. To compound matters, with Arsenal showing little sign of missing him despite Bukayo Saka's latest injury absence, the 19-year-old may have to seriously consider a future elsewhere, away from the club he has called home for more than half his life.

Why Selling Nwaneri Benefits Arsenal

Arsenal's substantial outlay on squad reinforcements last summer needs to be recouped somehow, and player sales represent the most straightforward route. A sizeable fee could potentially be secured for Gabriel Martinelli, while Gabriel Jesus and Leandro Trossard may attract interest from a number of clubs.

Yet Nwaneri is younger and carries greater long-term upside, making him both more valuable and more appealing to potential suitors. Even as the Premier League transitions to new financial regulations for 2026–27 — with Profit & Sustainability Rules set to be replaced by the Squad Cost Ratio — selling homegrown academy products for 'pure profit' still carries clear accounting advantages.

It may no longer serve as the same quick fix or 'loophole' for generating significant capital, but the opportunity to build longer-term financial flexibility still exists.

Clubs Nwaneri Could Sign For

The club most consistently linked with Nwaneri this season, well before the latest talk of an uncertain future at Arsenal, is Chelsea. Pursuing the youngster fits squarely within the kind of transfer strategy the Blues have embraced in recent years — acquiring players with considerable long-term potential before they hit their peak.

Admittedly, results haven't always been positive, as this season's cases of Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens illustrate. That said, moving on either of those 2025 signings could free up room for Nwaneri to come in.

Expecting him to step directly into Mohamed Salah's role would be ambitious, but Liverpool will soon have a vacancy on the right flank. Nwaneri is a different type of player — more of a creator than a finisher — and his youth and relative inexperience mean that any club signing him would need to exercise patience.

Aston Villa may rank slightly lower in prestige, but could arguably represent a more suitable destination at this stage of his career. Manager Unai Emery has a strong track record of nurturing talent, as demonstrated at Villa Park through his development of Morgan Rogers. The England international could be sold for a significant sum this year, potentially prompting Villa to seek a like-for-like replacement.

Elsewhere in the Premier League, Bournemouth, Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford — all of whom could offer varying levels of European football next season, including the Champions League — might represent a temporary step back that pays dividends in the long run.

For much of the Premier League era, top English players — with a few exceptions — showed little appetite for moves abroad, but attitudes have shifted considerably over the past five to ten years. Nwaneri has already shown a readiness to play overseas by joining Marseille, making La Liga, Serie A and the Bundesliga all realistic possibilities.

In Spain, Atlético Madrid are set to lose Antoine Griezmann imminently, while there is no certainty that Nico González will stay beyond his current loan from Juventus, with doubts surrounding the conditional purchase obligation. Fellow Englishmen Kieran Trippier and Conor Gallagher have both represented the Madrid side in recent seasons with varying degrees of success.

Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig both have strong histories of recruiting raw, young talent from the Premier League, with Jude Bellingham and Jadon Sancho standing out as the most prominent success stories.

In Italy, Juventus and AC Milan — neither currently performing at their historic levels and both lacking the financial firepower to compete at the top end of the market — represent plausible options.
