Which Jersey Number Could Yan Diomande Wear at Real Madrid?

Yan Diomande's ascent has been nothing short of remarkable. When the 19-year-old stepped off the bench to make his professional debut for Leganés against Real Madrid at the Bernabéu in March 2025, hardly anyone could have imagined that just over a year later he would return as a signing valued at well above $100 million.

Football moves at a blistering pace, and a standout season in the Bundesliga with RB Leipzig catapulted the young Ivorian winger into the conversation as one of the most sought-after talents in the game.

When Florentino Pérez was re-elected as Real Madrid president, he vowed to uphold his tradition of "signings that generate excitement." While Diomande may not yet be a certified superstar, he is undeniably a thrilling acquisition with all the natural tools to develop rapidly at the very club where his professional journey began.

As the marquee signing of the summer, Diomande is expected to become one of the most popular names on the back of shirts in club stores across Spain and around the world—even DJ Khaled has already declared himself a fan.

The burning question remains: which squad number will Real Madrid's newest addition wear?

Yan Diomande's Potential Shirt Numbers at Real Madrid

Yan Diomande

Diomande is young enough that he hasn't yet become strongly associated with any particular number.

During his single season at RB Leipzig he donned the No. 49, while he has predominantly worn 11 for Côte d'Ivoire—including at the 2026 World Cup—though he has also appeared in 26 and 9 for his national side.

At Leganés, his first professional club, he was assigned the No. 30.

Unhelpfully for predicting his next number, none of those digits are currently available at Real Madrid.

Rodrygo currently holds the No. 11, while Endrick has claimed the 9 from Mbappé after the Frenchman switched to 10. In La Liga, first-team players are required to wear numbers between 1 and 25, ruling out any sentimental choice of 49 or even 30 for Diomande.

As things stand, he will most likely pick from: 19, 20, or 25. In theory, Diomande could opt for 2 or 4, which are also currently unoccupied, but these would be remarkably unconventional—bordering on bizarre—choices for a non-defender.

Aurélien Tchouaméni has been linked with a lucrative move to Manchester United in recent weeks. Should a transfer materialize, it would put the No. 14 shirt up for grabs. Perhaps more likely to be freed up in the near term is Gonzalo García's No. 16, with the young forward widely expected to join Fulham.

Raúl Asencio and Brahim Díaz are two further players whose futures remain uncertain, potentially making the numbers 17 and 21 available as well.
