Who Could Be Florentino Perez's Jaw-Dropping $175 Million Real Madrid Transfer Gamble?

Who Could Be Florentino Perez's Jaw-Dropping $175 Million Real Madrid Transfer Gamble?

Just when it seemed the presidential race had hit 'Peak Madrid', Florentino Pérez managed to raise the bar once more.

Refusing to be overshadowed by rival candidate Enrique Riquelme—who brandished a "Haaland 9" shirt in front of two ant puppets on Wednesday evening—the 79-year-old Pérez appeared on prime-time Spanish talk show Horizonte, declaring he had secured a record-shattering deal for a "total Galáctico."

"I'm going to submit an offer to a Champions League club soon, on Tuesday, which will be the largest fee Real Madrid has ever paid for a player, at least €150 million [$175 million]," he teased, before adding: "It's not [Michael] Olise. He's a great player but it's not him. It's not [Jérémy] Doku, it's not [Erling] Haaland, it's not [Harry] Kane... And he's not from the Premier League. It's a total Galáctico."

Curiously, despite Pérez explicitly ruling out Olise, both The Telegraph and AS have reported that the Bayern Munich star is actually the player the president has in his sights.

Unlike Riquelme, Pérez has given himself some wiggle room, pledging only to submit a bid. His rival, by contrast, has vowed to personally reimburse all membership fees if he fails to deliver on his promise of signing both Rodri and Erling Haaland.

Nevertheless, it's enough of a bombshell to shift attention back to the veteran president's campaign, following a week largely dominated by Riquelme's bold claims of bringing two Manchester City stars to the Bernabéu—along with Raúl González as sporting director.

Perez Refuses To Be Outdone With Campaign Promises

Florentino Pérez

In reality, this move was entirely predictable from Pérez. He may not have invented the headline-grabbing campaign pledge, but he mastered it with his year 2000 promise to sign Luís Figo from Barcelona—a move that secured his first presidency and sent shockwaves through the football world.

Ahead of Thursday night's announcement, Pérez had been dropping hints along the campaign trail with posters across Madrid city center highlighting the marquee signings he has delivered throughout his tenure, from Figo to Kylian Mbappé, accompanied by the words "to be continued." He was, ultimately, never going to let socios head to the polls believing his summer ambitions extended only to Ibrahima Konaté and Denzel Dumfries.

But just who is the mystery superstar Pérez has in mind?

Here's a breakdown of the most credible, non-Premier League candidates.

1. Michael Olise

Michael Olise

Sure, Pérez explicitly denied it was Olise—but the 79-year-old isn't always the most trustworthy source.

The 24-year-old London-born French international is among the frontrunners for this year's Ballon d'Or following a campaign in which he netted 25 goals and provided 12 assists for his club.

2. João Neves

João Neves

Even before Pérez's prime-time announcement, there had already been speculation linking Madrid to Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Neves.

The Portuguese playmaker has just claimed back-to-back Champions League titles at the age of only 21 and ranks among the finest players in the world in his position.

With Madrid widely known to be seeking a long-overdue successor to Toni Kroos and Luka Modrić, few players fit the profile better.

His deal in Paris runs through to 2029.

3. Vitinha

Vitinha

Neves's central midfield partner at PSG is another compelling option.

Five years his senior but still at the peak of his powers, Vitinha consistently features at the top of rankings for the world's best midfield controllers and is a genuinely elite tempo-setter, while also contributing goals from deep.

Like Neves, he has three years remaining on his PSG contract. However, a report from Record in Portugal suggests the former Wolves man has a pre-agreed exit clause set at approximately €115 million ($133 million).

4. Désiré Doué

Désiré Doué

A two-footed, dynamic dribbler with genuine flair, Doué burst onto the scene during PSG's maiden Champions League triumph and has since become an integral part of Luis Enrique's continent-conquering setup.

Capable of operating on either wing, as a striker, and even—at a stretch—in a deeper midfield role, Doué would offer Real Madrid versatility, though whether the 21-year-old would be an automatic first-choice starter remains questionable.

He too is contracted until 2029.

5. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia

The last PSG player on this list is perhaps the one who would generate the greatest excitement among supporters—and the most significant headaches for squad balance.

Few players are as thrilling to watch as the elusive, unpredictable Kvaratskhelia, who dazzled in the Champions League for a second consecutive season—registering 10 goals in 16 outings in 2025–26.

Also tied down for three more years, Kvaratskhelia would represent a more audacious move from Pérez, given the Georgian only arrived at PSG eighteen months ago and thrives on the left flank—a position already overcrowded with both Mbappé and Vinicius Jr competing for minutes at Madrid.

6. Jamal Musiala

Jamal Musiala

The first non-PSG name on the list, Musiala might have been considered more of a Galáctico last summer, before he sustained a fractured fibula and broken ankle during the Club World Cup.

That setback limited the Bayern Munich star's involvement in the Bavarians' dominant title-winning campaign this season, with Kane, Olise and Luis Díaz stealing the spotlight. Even so, Musiala remains highly coveted at the top level.

As an attacking midfielder, there would once again be concern that his arrival could encroach on the territory of Madrid's existing superstars. He is also under contract in Munich until 2030.

7. Yan Diomande

Yan Diomande

The least-known name on the list, but the one rising fastest; Diomande is one of the most sought-after players this summer following a breakthrough campaign at RB Leipzig, where he was crowned Bundesliga Rookie of the Season.

The 19-year-old struck an impressive 13 times across all competitions in 2025–26 and is strongly linked with a nine-figure move to both Liverpool and PSG.

Primarily a right winger, the young Ivorian could be the perfect player to electrify Madrid's attack and fill the void created by Rodygo's extended injury absence.

8. Julián Alvarez

Julián Álvarez licking his lips.

Perhaps not the player Madrid most need, but the signing that would send the loudest message.

A move for Alvarez would carry the added bonus of getting one over on both Atlético Madrid and Barcelona simultaneously.

The Argentina striker is pushing for a departure from Atléti this summer, with Barça—and PSG—both pursuing a deal. Few things feel more quintessentially Pérez than a bold, high-profile transfer swoop to destabilize his fiercest rivals simply because he can.
