Twelve months after languishing in 15th place in the Premier League table, Manchester United surged back to third by the conclusion of the 2025–26 season, securing a return to Champions League football.
This marks United's first appearance in UEFA's flagship club competition in three years, with their previous participation coming in 2023–24 under manager Erik ten Hag. That campaign came to a disappointing early exit at the group stage, though the tournament has undergone considerable changes since then.
In 2026–27, the Red Devils are navigating the league phase format for the very first time. Rather than needing a top-two finish in a four-team group, clubs must now place within the top 24 of the league phase to advance to the knockout rounds, though a top-eight finish would allow them to skip a round entirely and enter directly at the last 16.
Michael Carrick managed with a relatively lean squad during the second half of last season, when the club's attention was solely on Premier League duties. This summer's focus has been on expanding the roster to handle the demands of multiple competitions, with three midfield additions already secured and the possibility of further reinforcements still on the table.
What 2026–27 Champions League Pot Are Man Utd In?
All participating clubs will discover their eight league phase opponents on Thursday when UEFA conducts the draw at its headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland.
The 36 teams are divided equally into four numbered pots, from 1 to 4. Seeding is determined by UEFA's club coefficient rankings, which allocate points based on results across all UEFA competitions over a rolling five-year window. While United's Champions League involvement has been sporadic in recent seasons, their run to the Europa League final in 2025 carries meaningful weight in the rankings.
Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid feature among the pot one clubs, joined by Premier League representatives Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City. United have been placed in pot two.

The draw will assign United two league phase opponents from each pot, producing eight total fixtures for this stage. One match from each pot will be played at home and the other away. Country protection rules apply, meaning United cannot be drawn against fellow English clubs, and facing more than two teams from the same nation is also prohibited.
The pool of eligible pot one opponents is automatically narrowed due to the English clubs' presence and country protection rules, leaving Carrick's side to draw two from PSG, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Inter, Barcelona and Atlético Madrid.
Should United be paired with two Spanish clubs early in the draw, no further La Liga sides could be assigned to them for the remainder of the process.
In pot two, which also includes Aston Villa, seven opponents are available. The Portuguese duo of Sporting CP and Porto represent notable challenges, as do Roma and Borussia Dortmund. Club Brugge, PSV Eindhoven and Real Betis — making their Champions League return for the first time in two decades — would be considered more manageable draws.
Pot three makes for particularly compelling reading, given the quality on offer for what are nominally the third-tier teams of the league phase. United have no restrictions at the outset, though Spanish, German and Italian options may be eliminated depending on earlier selections from those nations.
Napoli, RB Leipzig and Villarreal stand out as opponents to be wary of, while Turkish heavyweights Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe should not be underestimated. Pot three also contains Feyenoord, Lille, a Bodø/Glimt side riding high after last season's exploits, and Shakhtar Donetsk, who will host their home fixtures at Stamford Bridge in London due to the continuing conflict in Ukraine.
Pot four includes several clubs whose primary achievement is simply qualifying for the league phase, among them Azerbaijan's Sabah and Norwegian outfit Viking. Slovan Bratislava are now under the stewardship of Manchester City icon Yaya Touré, while Como are making their debut in European competition. United have no prior history against any of these sides.

United have previously crossed paths with LASK in the Europa League in recent memory. Their last encounter with Stuttgart came during the 2003–04 group stage, while AEK Athens and Slavia Prague would both be entirely new opponents for the club.
