Who Will Claim the 2026 World Cup Golden Boot? The Top Contenders Ranked

The 2026 World Cup will be remembered as a tournament where the biggest names delivered on the grandest stage.

Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland and others have dazzled crowds across North America, captivating supporters of all generations while fueling one of the most thrilling Golden Boot races in the competition's 96-year history.

With two matches remaining for the leading candidates to pad their tallies, what could be a record-shattering contest is set to go down to the final whistle.

What Is the Golden Boot Award?

Harry Kane

The World Cup Golden Boot is awarded to the tournament's leading goal scorer. Unlike the media-voted Golden Ball, this honor is decided purely by numbers: whoever scores the most goals takes it home. In recent editions, assists have served as the tiebreaker when players are level on goals.

Past winners include Just Fontaine, whose 13 goals for France at the 1958 tournament remain a single-edition record, alongside legends Gerd Müller, Ronaldo, Miroslav Klose, and Mbappé—the 2022 champion with eight goals.

No player has ever claimed the Boot on two occasions, and Messi has yet to get his hands on the award.

The Top Contenders to Win the Golden Boot—Ranked

On only five previous occasions has a player needed more than eight goals to claim the Golden Boot trophy, and never before have two or more players simultaneously reached that mark.

With Messi and Mbappé already level on eight goals and two games still to play, this ranks among the highest-scoring races in the tournament's history.

Here's a breakdown of the leading contenders still in the running to receive the prize when the tournament wraps up on July 19.

Note: Erling Haaland's seven goals place him third overall, but with Norway eliminated and his tournament over, he has no path to overtaking the leaders and claiming the trophy.

6. Mikel Oyarzabal

Mikel Oyarzabal

Goals: 4
Assists: 1

Four goals in six appearances is a solid return for Spain's main attacking outlet, but Mikel Oyarzabal hasn't enjoyed the same volume of chances as some of his rivals.

Spain as a whole has managed just 11 goals throughout the tournament—the fewest among any semifinalist—and Oyarzabal has found the net in only two of his side's six matches, scoring braces against both Saudi Arabia and Austria.

A pair of standout performances in the remaining two games could still elevate him up the leaderboard, but it's hard to picture Oyarzabal lifting the Golden Boot at this stage.

5. Ousmane Dembélé

Assists: 2

The reigning Ballon d'Or holder already has enough goals to have won the award on four separate occasions in the past, but this 2026 World Cup is anything but ordinary.

Three of Ousmane Dembélé's five goals came in the Group I fixture against a rotated Norway side, and he has largely played in the shadow of Kylian Mbappé this summer. Even so, he cannot be written off entirely.

4. Harry Kane

Goals: 6
Assists: 1

Only the second Englishman to win a World Cup Golden Boot (following Gary Lineker), Harry Kane is aiming to become the first player of any nationality to win the award on two occasions.

The quarterfinal victory over Norway was only the second time the Bayern Munich striker has gone scoreless at this tournament, leaving him behind the frontrunners with just two more chances to close the gap.

3. Jude Bellingham

Goals: 6
Assists: 1

With his decisive brace against Norway, Bellingham became the first player to score twice in back-to-back World Cup knockout matches since Diego Maradona in 1986—quite the company to keep.

Despite sharing the same goals and assists tally as Kane, England's No.10 sits ahead of his international teammate in the standings due to having logged fewer minutes on the pitch.

2. Lionel Messi

Goals: 8
Assists: 2

Anyone who believed Messi's 2022 World Cup performances were impossible to surpass has been proven spectacularly wrong, as the 39-year-old continues to defy the laws of aging in a manner that must surely have Silicon Valley billionaires taking notice.

This summer, Messi has also become both the all-time World Cup top scorer (21) and the record provider of assists (10).

1. Kylian Mbappé

Sitting just behind Messi in the all-time charts is Mbappé (20), and it's easy to imagine the Frenchman taking over the top spot at some point—whether this summer or further along in his career.

Mbappé has been unstoppable across North America, finding the net in every match he has featured in—except the Norway game, where he contributed two assists to give him the advantage over Messi in the overall standings.
