Following a thrilling weekend, the U.S. men's national team returns to the field quickly, taking on Chile this Tuesday in St. Louis.
The USMNT celebrated a dominant 4–1 win over Peru on Saturday, a statement performance in their first outing since the World Cup that featured a wave of fresh American talent. Eleven players earned their first caps—eight of them teenagers, with three starting from the beginning. The newcomers had a hand in every single goal.
Chile will present a stiffer test for the Stars and Stripes, who haven't beaten the South American side since 2000. Still, head coach Mauricio Pochettino is likely to field another experimental squad with heavy rotation, given both the surprising success of Saturday's heavily-shuffled lineup and the fact that the team will have had only two full days to recover.
Here is a look at how the Stars and Stripes might set up at Energizer Park.
USMNT Predicted XI vs. Chile

GK: Brian Schwake—On Saturday, Pochettino chose to use both World Cup regular Matt Freese and debutant Diego Kochen, each taking a half in goal. Looking to give other keepers a run, Pochettino may be set to hand 25-year-old newcomer Brian Schwake his first appearance on Tuesday. Schwake currently tops MLS—Freese included—in save percentage (76.1%) this season and has been instrumental in Nashville SC's strong push for the MLS Cup. He's a safe choice.
RB: Sergiño Dest—Alex Freeman logged nearly 80 minutes on the right side Saturday, which means a well-rested and in-form Sergiño Dest could earn the starting nod. While Pochettino deployed Dest as a right winger throughout the summer, the 25-year-old World Cup veteran is enjoying the best start of his career at right back for club side PSV Eindhoven.
CB: Chris Richards—On the topic of fresh legs, Chris Richards was absent from Saturday's squad and will arrive fully prepared on Tuesday. He has been a cornerstone of Pochettino's defensive setup, and his presence on the field brings a sense of calm to the entire backline.
CB: Neil Pierre—The 18-year-old made his international debut on Saturday, coming on as a substitute for center back George Campbell with just two minutes remaining. Widely seen as the long-term heir to veteran center back Tim Ream, 38, Pochettino may be keen to give Richards and Pierre the opportunity to build chemistry together.
LB: Antonee Robinson—The dynamic fullback sat out most of Saturday's action, giving teenager Peyton Miller the chance to make his debut. While the 18-year-old impressed, Robinson's creativity, technical quality, and pace down the left side remain unmatched. Having featured for only 30 minutes over the weekend, the 29-year-old Premier League defender looks set to reclaim his spot in the starting eleven.
CM: Sebastian Berhalter—In under 30 minutes on the pitch, Sebastian Berhalter contributed both a goal and an assist. The 25-year-old, thrust into the role of experienced head among a group of youngsters despite his own limited international experience, is rapidly emerging as one of the team's most dangerous attacking options. He could earn a start in central midfield, giving captain Tyler Adams some much-needed rest.
CM: Yunus Musah—The 23-year-old AC Milan midfielder partnered Adams in the middle on Saturday, and the two clicked as an effective double-pivot. Though Yunus Musah fell out of Pochettino's plans last year, he is swiftly making a case for a renewed role. Pochettino will be curious to see whether he can build a similarly productive partnership alongside Berhalter.

RW: Cavan Sullivan—The 17-year-old prodigy lived up to the hype in his debut on Saturday, becoming the youngest USMNT debutant since a 16-year-old Freddy Adu in 2006. Sullivan carved out several threatening opportunities in Peru's penalty area and linked up seamlessly with Freeman on the right flank, as though the two had played together for years. Pochettino could hand him a second consecutive start.
AM: Giovanni Reyna—In a bid to blend experience with youth, Pochettino may choose to keep Reyna in the attacking midfield role. The 23-year-old, who impressed at the World Cup, wasted no time getting involved on Saturday, setting up the USMNT's first goal with a free kick in the fourth minute.
LW: Cole Campbell—Along with Richards, 20-year-old Cole Campbell was one of the only players not to feature in Saturday's match. He arrives fully rested and ready to fill the significant void left by Christian Pulisic on the left flank in what would be his senior international debut.
ST: Julian Hall—The 18-year-old natural striker needed just 10 minutes off the bench to find the net against Peru, cleverly deflecting a cross with his knee into the goal. Hall rounded off an outstanding senior debut with an assist on Berhalter's 90th-minute strike, and having played fewer than 30 minutes, he will be primed to start from the first whistle.
