Who Will Wear the Armband? Four Bold Candidates to Replace Tim Ream as USMNT Captain

The U.S. men's national team finds itself without a clear leader. Following Tim Ream's retirement from international football, the squad lacks a definitive captain as the 2030 World Cup cycle gets underway.

Although several players have previously donned the armband for the USMNT or their respective clubs, it remains uncertain who will emerge as the face of the team's leadership group going forward.

Head coach Mauricio Pochettino has expressed his desire to resolve the captaincy question sooner rather than later. Even so, the decision is far from straightforward, given the emergence of young talent, a constantly evolving starting lineup, and broader questions about his vision for the USMNT.

Here, Sports Illustrated breaks down four candidates who could be in the running for the role.

4. Antonee Robinson

Antonee Robinson

Antonee Robinson has already gained some captaincy experience at the international level, having worn the armband during the 4–2 victory over Chile in the second match of the September-October international window.

The adaptable left-sided defender has demonstrated leadership qualities as one of the team's more seasoned figures, particularly this fall as one of the oldest players in a squad featuring eight teenagers and previously 13 uncapped players. With two World Cup appearances, 60 international caps, and Premier League experience at Fulham, he makes a compelling case for the captaincy.

That said, the USMNT is not short on leaders or vocal personalities in its player pool. Those ranked above him on this list may be better suited to serve as a consistent first-choice captain, and some of the emerging youngsters could also grow into leadership roles in the coming years.

After guiding the USMNT to victory in a fiery clash against Chile on the night Ream officially called time on his international career, Robinson remains a viable candidate. However, he may ultimately serve as a secondary option going forward.

3. Sebastian Berhalter

Sebastian Berhalter

Sebastian Berhalter's ascent within the USMNT setup has been nothing short of impressive over the past year, making his mark at the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup before a standout World Cup performance and a subsequent move to Europe from the Vancouver Whitecaps in 2026.

At the Whitecaps, he occasionally wore the armband and was consistently regarded as an intense, vocal presence on the pitch. Having played and developed alongside Thomas Müller, he brings a wealth of experience and perspective that sets him apart from many of his USMNT teammates. He also grew up with his father Gregg as a natural-born leader in the dugout.

"He can play from the left, can play from the right, can play like a midfielder, box-to-box, but also holding midfielder; he can play as a No. 10, from different positions and he's always very happy to do anything for the national team," Pochettino said following the recent win over Chile. "To have a player like him is priceless."

While Berhalter has cemented his place in the USMNT picture and appears destined for the Premier League — whether through a Middlesbrough promotion push or a direct transfer — the key question remains whether he can secure a consistent starting spot with the Stars and Stripes. If he manages that, he could emerge as a top contender for the captaincy.

2. Chris Richards

Chris Richards

At just 26 years old, Chris Richards has already established himself as a reliable leader at the heart of the USMNT defense. He spent several years playing alongside Ream and absorbing lessons from the former Premier League stalwart, channeling that experience into his own impressive run with Crystal Palace and a prominent role at the 2026 World Cup.

Given the relative stability that comes with the center-back position, appointing Richards as the primary captain could provide a sense of continuity that others might struggle to offer, making for a natural transition from Ream.

"I think Chris Richards is made for it," Ream told NBC at the World Cup when asked about a potential successor. "I think he would be perfect. But again, it's gonna come down to whoever is in charge and what they see and what characteristics and what personalities that they value."

1. Tyler Adams

Tyler Adams

Tyler Adams wore the USMNT armband in the recent friendly victory over Peru and served as captain at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Could he be the long-term leader of this group? All signs point to the Bournemouth midfielder as the frontrunner.

If Pochettino is looking for a swift resolution to the captaincy question, with a player who features in every best possible lineup he can put together, Adams is the obvious choice. Having taken on a greater leadership role among his younger teammates, he has drawn considerable praise from Pochettino.

"Tyler is doing great. I think after two years, he was showing with (Ream), too, that he's a great leader," Pochettino said of a player who will be 31 years old at the 2030 World Cup. "He translates everything—the culture from the country to the new players, to the young players. He translates to the fans what it means to represent that country. He also translates to the coaches. He translates (it) to everyone.

"He's a perfect ambassador for us because I think he's great in front to you (the media), translating to the fans and to everyone what it means to defend that badge. And of course ... maybe we are thinking to try to name the new captain. And of course, Tyler is one of the candidates."
