Real Madrid were actually pipped to the post in their pursuit of Vinícius Júnior when he was still a teenage sensation at Flamengo in Brazil.

With fewer than 12 months remaining on that deal and a deadlock so entrenched it has prompted Arsenal to explore a potential move for Vinícius Jr, his contract situation has never carried more weight.

"They don't pay me to be nice," Vinícius Jr has remarked previously. Given his rumored earnings, some might argue he could afford to throw in a pleasant demeanor at no extra cost.
Multiple reports from Spain have converged on the view that the 26-year-old is thought to earn between $17.1–19.4 million (€15–17 million) annually after tax, roughly equivalent to around $600,000 (£450,000) gross per week. However, BBC Sport suggest that his actual salary from a contract running until June 30, 2027 is "considerably more."
Performance-related bonuses naturally factor into the equation, and Vinícius Jr also benefits from various endorsement arrangements tied to Madrid — as well as independent deals — that boost his overall income. Nevertheless, he is still believed to be seeking a more substantial pay package.
What Are Vinicius Jr's Reported Real Madrid Demands?
Vinícius Jr's demands reportedly reached unprecedented levels when they first surfaced in 2025. The winger was said to be targeting a salary on par with Cristiano Ronaldo's club-record earnings of approximately $35 million (€30 million) net per year.
Yet even the legendary forward never received the "renewal bonus" that his successor in the No. 7 shirt was reportedly seeking last summer.
It has since been reported in Spain that Vinícius Jr has scaled back his salary request to around €20 million ($23 million) net per season — more in line with the club's top earner Kylian Mbappé — rather than the historic benchmark set by Ronaldo. However, the renewal bonus is believed to remain on the table and is expected to be a significant sticking point for Real Madrid's leadership.

Despite the relentless speculation surrounding his supposedly uncertain future, Vinícius Jr has done little to fuel the rumor mill. If anything, he has gone out of his way to demonstrate his commitment to Real Madrid.
"I've never pictured myself anywhere other than Real Madrid," the Brazilian stressed in an interview with CazéTV following the end of the 2025–26 season. "I cherish every moment I spend here because it is the club of my dreams.
"I savor every moment and I want to keep playing here for the rest of my career."
"I'm also not in any hurry to renew my contract," Vinícius Jr continued. "We have an agreement until 2027, so between now and then there is plenty to discuss with Real Madrid, and Real Madrid with us. The club is relaxed about it, I'm relaxed, the president trusts me and I trust him. That's the long and short of it."
The only hint of friction arose during Xabi Alonso's brief tenure as manager. The two never quite aligned — Alonso reportedly considered dropping Vinícius Jr as early as his sixth match in charge, only for those plans to be derailed by an injury to Trent Alexander-Arnold — and there was a very public display of frustration when Madrid's No. 7 marched straight down the tunnel after being substituted in the opening Clásico of last season.
Reports at the time indicated that Vinícius Jr told the club he would not put pen to paper on a new deal while Alonso remained at the helm. Within two months, Alonso had been dismissed.
How Vinicius Jr's Expiring Contract Could Affect His Price Tag
In a summer window where teenage wingers with fewer than 18 months of top-level experience can command fees north of $150 million, BBC Sport estimate that Vinícius Jr would be valued at more than $266.8 million (£200 million) were his contract not set to expire next year.
Given the circumstances of his current deal, the latest reports suggest Arsenal would 'only' need to surpass $182 million (€160 million) to lure the star forward away from the Spanish capital.
Such a figure would not only make Vinícius Jr Arsenal's most expensive acquisition and Real Madrid's priciest departure, but would instantly place him third in the all-time transfer rankings, behind only what Paris Saint-Germain paid for Neymar Jr and Mbappé back in 2017.
Will Vinicius Jr Extend His Real Madrid Contract?
Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez seldom has anything negative to say about Vinícius Jr. During his successful campaign to reclaim the presidency, he appeared unconcerned by the absence of a new agreement. "There's time," he said casually at the start of the summer.
"I'd love for him to stay forever. He's delivered us the last two Champions Leagues and he embodies the club brilliantly. You know who doesn't like him? Anyone who isn't a Real Madrid supporter."
This view is also believed to be shared by incoming Real Madrid manager José Mourinho. With the player, president and manager all aligned, it would appear that Vinícius Jr is going nowhere. And yet the links to Arsenal have continued to surface.
