Cristiano Ronaldo's career goal tally currently sits at a staggering 979.
That's 979 times the five-time Ballon d'Or recipient has found the net in senior, competitive football for club and country since his debut all the way back in 2002. It's a remarkable achievement—and more than any professional has ever (officially) accumulated throughout the history of the game. But it still isn't quite enough.
"This is probably my final year in football, and I want to leave behind a spectacular legacy," Ronaldo told Vogue at the beginning of this season.
The 41-year-old has set himself two objectives for his farewell campaign: 1,000 career goals and claiming the UEFA Nations League with Portugal for a third time.
He reaffirmed both ambitions ahead of Portugal's 1–0 victory over Wales at the end of September, just days before things began to unravel.
Ronaldo stormed out of Portugal's training camp following a falling-out with manager Jorge Jesus, who left the veteran forward on the bench for the subsequent victory against Norway, and then declined to offer an apology at a press conference that followed. Reports indicated Ronaldo felt "betrayed" by the coach.
Behind closed doors, Portugal officials are desperately seeking ways to mend Ronaldo's relationship with the national side, but the icon's international future remains deeply uncertain.
With the Nations League ambition now seriously in jeopardy, Ronaldo's other objective of reaching 1,000 goals could also be impacted. If the superstar cannot be persuaded to return to international duty, can he still secure the 21 remaining goals he requires?
How Many Games Does Ronaldo Have Left?

If this is indeed to be Ronaldo's final season as he has indicated, his remaining appearances are limited.
With seven matches already played in the Saudi Pro League this season, he has a maximum of 27 further fixtures remaining with club side Al Nassr in the division in 2026–27.
In addition, Al Nassr are guaranteed at least seven more AFC Champions League Elite fixtures, in which Ronaldo would be expected to feature if healthy, with the possibility of extending that to 14 additional matches should they advance to the final.
Domestic cup competitions represent the only other avenues for Ronaldo to add to his goal tally. The King's Cup offers the possibility of up to five more matches, though potentially just one if Al Nassr are eliminated in the Round of 32, while a further two matches could be available in the 2026 Saudi Super Cup.
Ronaldo's Remaining Club Fixtures 2026–27
Tournament | Minimum Games | Maximum Games |
|---|---|---|
Saudi Pro League | 27 | 27 |
AFC Champions League Elite | 7 | 14 |
King's Cup | 1 | 5 |
Saudi Super Cup | 1 | 2 |
Total | 36 | 48 |
With a minimum of 36 matches still remaining before the season (and his career) concludes, Ronaldo would need to average approximately 0.58 goals per game to reach his milestone. This figure will naturally decrease should Al Nassr progress further in their cup competitions.
Across each of his three complete seasons in Saudi Arabia, he has comfortably surpassed the 0.58 ratio, recording 0.81 goals per game in 2025–26.
Only a significant dip in form or an injury setback is likely to prevent Ronaldo from reaching his target, regardless of whether he is persuaded to return to international football.
Has Any Player Scored 1,000 Before?

Once again, Ronaldo finds himself on the verge of making history.
By reaching four figures, the Portuguese icon will shatter a barrier that has never officially been crossed by anyone else in the sport.
Three-time World Cup champion Pelé is frequently credited with scoring 1,279 goals (including by Guinness World Records), but many of the Brazilian legend's strikes came in non-competitive fixtures, and his widely recognized official tally for club and country is actually 762.

Al Nassr (2022–Present) | 132 |
Portugal (2004–Present) | 146 |

Similarly, Romário is another player who has claimed to have reached 1,000, though his total as documented by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) stands at 545.
German Erwin Helmchen and Austrian Josef Bican—both of whom netted the bulk of their goals prior to WWII—are two further players cited as having career totals approaching (or even surpassing) 1,000. However, limitations in record-keeping and the ambiguity surrounding official versus unofficial matches in the pre-war era mean their figures remain widely contested. Bican is credited with 722 goals by IFFHS, while Helmchen is recorded with 729.
Lionel Messi, as is so frequently the case, remains Ronaldo's nearest official rival with a total of 931 goals.
