Real Madrid are bracing for a period of change as Dani Carvajal prepares to depart.
Though the veteran right back played sparingly this season, he served as club captain and remains the most experienced figure in the dressing room by a considerable margin. His departure marks the end of an era, leaving no player from Madrid's back-to-back-to-back Champions League triumphs between 2016 and 2018 still at the club.
Leadership has been a recurring issue at Madrid in recent years. Sergio Ramos departed long ago, and Toni Kroos, Luka Modrić, and Nacho Fernández have since followed. The dressing room is increasingly short on authoritative voices.
Alongside the anticipated arrival of new manager José Mourinho, Real Madrid will once again need to name a new club captain ahead of the coming season.
How Do Real Madrid Appoint Captains?

This will mark the sixth consecutive season in which Madrid have had to install a new captain.
When Ramos left in 2021, the armband was handed to Marcelo. After the Brazilian's exit a year later, it moved to Karim Benzema, who held it for just one season before passing it to Nacho. In the summer of 2024, Modrić took over the captaincy, only for it to transfer to Carvajal twelve months on. The role has, in many respects, become something of a poisoned chalice at the club.
For much of their history, Madrid's approach has been to award the captaincy to the longest-serving first-team player—a policy that, by its very nature, exposes the club to frequent changes in leadership.
With genuine veterans now thin on the ground, there is growing speculation that the club may soon deviate from this traditional approach.
The selection of Madrid's next captain arrives at a pivotal moment for the club.
Who Will Be Real Madrid's Next Captain?

Currently, Federico Valverde stands to take the armband as the club's existing vice-captain. The 27-year-old has been part of the Madrid first team since 2018 and has accumulated more than 350 appearances for the club. In Carvajal's absence through injury or rotation, he has regularly captained Los Blancos this season.
The Uruguayan also has Carvajal's personal blessing. In response to Valverde's farewell post on Instagram, the departing captain wrote: "You've brought tears to my eyes, mate!! Thank you for everything over these years!! You're phenomenal, as I've told you so many times. The armband is in safe hands!!"
That said, Valverde is far from a straightforward selection. The combustible midfielder has found himself at the heart of controversy in recent weeks and has not featured for the club since sustaining a head injury following an altercation with Aurélien Tchouaméni in early May.
Earlier in the season, he also attracted attention for publicly voicing his frustration over his positional role under then-manager Xabi Alonso, telling the press he "wasn't born to play right back."
Reports have even emerged suggesting that, amid tensions within Madrid's dressing room, certain senior players are pushing for Valverde to be sold following his involvement in the embarrassing training ground incident.
AS reports that a faction within the Madrid squad is now advocating for the club to adopt a hybrid model for captain selection, one that would incorporate a player vote on leadership.
Leaders Wanted

Behind Valverde, Vinicius Jr and Thibaut Courtois are the most senior players remaining in the squad and both feature in the leadership group, though few at the club have emerged from this season's internal discord entirely unscathed.
Vinicius Jr—who wore the armband during the recent Clásico loss—continues to divide opinion at the Bernabéu and has been met with jeers from the home faithful on multiple occasions this season. Nevertheless, he has demonstrated a willingness to speak out on behalf of the club at key moments, and his output has remained steady despite a turbulent campaign.
Elsewhere, Real Madrid's recent shift toward recruiting younger talent in the transfer market has left the squad somewhat light on experienced leadership. A high-profile signing with the right credentials—such as the widely discussed Rodri—could immediately emerge as a viable candidate. Kylian Mbappé, however, would be a deeply contentious choice as captain given the controversy that has surrounded him throughout the season.
Meanwhile, Antonio Rüdiger, who is reportedly set to sign a one-year extension to his expiring deal, stands out as the most compelling candidate from the current squad to be elevated into a leadership role, should the club choose to abandon the seniority-based system.
Adding another layer of complexity is the imminent arrival of Mourinho. The 63-year-old is not one to leave team affairs in others' hands. Throughout his managerial career, he has consistently leaned on his captains to serve as on-pitch commanders. Just how much influence the incoming boss will have over the captaincy decision remains an open question.
