Will VAR Technology Feature in the 2025–26 Carabao Cup Third Round?

The Carabao Cup has functioned as a testing ground for English football's most recent technological innovations.

It was in the competition's semifinal stage during 2018–19 when video assistant referee (VAR) technology made its debut in England. Subsequently, last season witnessed the introduction of another modern enhancement to match experiences, as stadium announcements explaining VAR rulings were tested for the first time.

The vast majority favor its elimination, but we've likely progressed too far for complete VAR removal. The comprehensive technology simply hasn't improved the sport as many anticipated, and numerous fans desire relief from the tedious interruptions.

During the initial stages, football without VAR can be experienced.

Is VAR Used in Carabao Cup Third Round?

The Carabao Cup third round has commenced, with four matches occurring last week. Now it's time for the major clubs, with the six Champions League participants facing teams currently playing in the English Football League (EFL).

Following its debut in 2018–19, VAR has exclusively been utilized for the Carabao Cup semifinals and final.

Currently, however, VAR might be considered 'operational' earlier in the tournament if all host venues possess VAR infrastructure. While the Premier League remains the sole English division employing this technology, certain EFL stadiums can install the required equipment enabling VAR functionality.

In this season's third round, VAR remains inactive, as multiple lower-division teams are hosting fixtures, including Port Vale and Lincoln City.

Additional EFL clubs will participate in the fourth round, making it difficult to predict when VAR will first appear in this season's Carabao Cup. It was implemented for the semifinals previously, featuring four Premier League teams, but there's potential for its use in the quarterfinals later this year.
