Wojciech Szczesny Secures Long-Term Barcelona Deal as Contract Extension Terms Emerge

Barcelona and Wojciech Szczęsny have finalized a contract extension that will see the Polish shot-stopper remain with the Catalan club for an additional two seasons.

The Blaugrana brought Szczęsny out of his retirement as a free transfer following Marc-Andre ter Stegen's knee injury just one month into the 2024–25 campaign. Throughout the season's first half, Szczęsny remained as Iñaki Peña's understudy before assuming the number one position at the start of 2025, where he firmly established himself.

From Szczęsny's debut appearance for Barcelona in the Copa del Rey fixture against UD Barbastro, the Catalans embarked on an impressive 22-match unbeaten streak in all tournaments with the ex-Arsenal and Juventus keeper between the posts.

Across 30 total matches in the 2024–25 season, Szczęsny recorded 14 shutouts, and Barcelona remained unbeaten in his 15 La Liga appearances, a remarkable run that propelled the team from third position to securing the championship with two matches remaining.

Following his retirement announcement after Euro 2024, the 35-year-old netminder came out of retirement to play a crucial part in Barcelona achieving their maiden domestic treble triumph.

The contract extension for Szczęsny seemed inevitable, with media reports indicating negotiations had been ongoing since before the season's conclusion. Barcelona's goalkeeping department appears overcrowded as their sole summer signing thus far has been the acquisition of promising Spanish keeper Joan García from cross-town rivals Espanyol.

Peña's exit seems virtually certain, while Szczęsny's contract renewal creates additional doubt regarding ter Stegen's future, who serves as Barcelona's captain and has been their primary goalkeeper for years.
