World Cup Golden Boot Winner Delivers Disappointing MLS Debut Performance

Following two seasons wearing the same Bayern Munich colors, James Rodríguez faced off against Thomas Müller on Sunday for the first time in their professional careers. However, the newly-acquired Minnesota United playmaker will probably prefer to erase memories of this reunion and MLS introduction after suffering a crushing 6–0 defeat to Müller's Vancouver Whitecaps.

This contest represented the inaugural occasion when two former World Cup Golden Boot champions competed in the same MLS fixture, with Rodríguez claiming the honor in 2014 and Müller in 2010; nevertheless, neither football icon made a substantial impact. Both began as substitutes, and the Whitecaps commanded a 4–0 advantage at the interval.

Rodríguez, who hadn't participated in a club fixture since November with Club Léon in Liga MX, entered at the 64th minute with his team down 5–0, but provided a minor boost. The 34-year-old Colombian competed for 13 minutes alongside Müller, after the 36-year-old German joined the action in the 77th minute.

Although Rodríguez displayed some energetic sequences, he found it difficult to retain the ball and overcome defenders. His initial meaningful involvement occurred in the 69th minute when he delivered a corner kick to striker Kelvin Yeboah at the edge of the six-yard area, only for the Loons forward to direct the ball straight into goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka's grasp.

Considering the team's disappointing display, which stands as the most severe loss in franchise history, Minnesota chose not to present its official sponsored Man of the Match recognition.

"It's unfortunate that these are the conditions we're introducing him under," Minnesota coach Cameron Knowles commented regarding Rodríguez's debut. "We would have preferred he's entering to help us secure victory, but any positive display is preferable to nothing."

Although neither made a substantial difference in the contest, Rodríguez and Müller exchanged jerseys following the match, having shared numerous Bundesliga championships and other accolades during their tenure together in Munich.

For Rodríguez, the Minnesota club represents his 13th professional team. He remains under contract through the 2026 World Cup, with Minnesota possessing a club option to retain him through the conclusion of the 2026 MLS campaign.

Müller expressed astonishment upon learning that the Colombian joined the Loons.

"I was somewhat shocked that he selected Minnesota," Müller stated before the contest. "I recall in Munich, he constantly complained about being cold, that the weather was too harsh for him. Now he's heading to Minnesota, which is likely the most frigid location in the United States."

With his introduction complete, Rodríguez and the Loons will focus on next week's encounter against the Seattle Sounders, hoping for a dramatically improved result in what might be his inaugural appearance before home fans.

Meanwhile, Müller's Whitecaps face the same Sounders on Wednesday, aiming to overcome a 3–0 disadvantage in the second leg of the Concacaf Champions Cup round of 16 before meeting Timo Werner's San Jose Earthquakes in their upcoming  MLS fixture.
