World Cup Referees vs. Premier League, MLS & La Liga: Who Earns the Biggest Paycheck?

World Cup Referees vs. Premier League, MLS & La Liga: Who Earns the Biggest Paycheck?

Much like players aspire to represent their nations at the World Cup, referees harbor the same dream of officiating at football's grandest stage.

A total of 52 referees from around the world have descended on North America for this summer's competition, each hoping to leave with their standing elevated, their ambitions realized and, perhaps most importantly, their finances considerably improved.

Refereeing is far from a voluntary role, with the world's top officials receiving generous compensation for managing matches at the highest level. While their earnings still fall well short of the players they oversee, there is still substantial money available for the finest officials in the game.

Here's a look at exactly how much officials stand to earn at the 2026 World Cup.

How Much Do World Cup Referees Earn?

The Times has reported that referees at this summer's tournament can earn as much as $100,000, with sizeable bonuses also on offer for those officiating in the competition's later rounds. Naturally, the full amount will go to whichever official — yet to be determined — takes charge of the final.

This represents a notable increase compared to the 2014 World Cup, when referees earned roughly half of what is being offered this time around.

The bulk of referees at the 2026 World Cup come from UEFA, though Germany's Daniel Siebert — who refereed last season's Champions League final — has notably been left out. Just under 29% of the officials are European.

There are also nine referees from Concacaf, including Americans Tori Penso and Ismail Elfath. César Arturo Ramos and Katia Itzel García represent Mexico, while Drew Fischer is the sole Canadian official involved.

The World Cup offers a lucrative windfall for officials worldwide, given how much they can earn over such a condensed timeframe.

In the Premier League, referees earn between $227,000 and $240,000 over a full season — but that spans nine months, compared to just five weeks at the World Cup. Anthony Taylor and Michael Oliver serve as the Premier League's representatives at the tournament, with Video Assistant Referee (VAR) Jarred Gillett also in attendance.

According to 2024 data from The Athletic, La Liga referees receive a fixed annual salary of around $157,000, supplemented by approximately $5,375 per match and an additional $29,000 for image rights.

In March 2024, The Athletic reported that Major League Soccer referees are compensated on a tiered scale based on experience, following an agreement between the Professional Soccer Referees Association and the league.

MLS officials earn salaries ranging from roughly $89,000 at the entry level for those in a probationary period, up to approximately $176,000 for referees who have overseen more than 300 matches.
