World Cup Star Powers LAFC to Shatter Historic MLS Milestone

World Cup Star Powers LAFC to Shatter Historic MLS Milestone

LAFC, guided by former World Cup champion Hugo Lloris, etched their name in MLS history on Saturday evening, achieving an unprecedented fifth consecutive clean sheet to start the 2026 campaign.

Despite the Black and Gold being held to a 0–0 stalemate away to Austin FC, they pushed their shutout run to 450 minutes, surpassing the previous mark set by Vancouver Whitecaps in 2012 at 427 minutes.

Lloris has accumulated 16 stops over five matches, while LAFC, who have entered a fresh chapter after Marc Dos Santos took over from Steve Cherundolo as head coach, have maintained their momentum in the Concacaf Champions Cup, earning a quarterfinal meeting with Liga MX powerhouse and 2025 titleholders Cruz Azul.

What a save to keep the clean sheet and set a new MLS record.

"[Lloris] is a leader, not only with the save. The save is one big moment, but then he communicates with the back line really well," Dos Santos said post-match. "It's very hard to play five games in MLS without conceding a goal. You can't do that if you're not a team that's together and that has the right mentality, so we need to continue building the team."

Beyond Lloris's brilliance, the California club has depended on a steady defensive partnership of Nkosi Tafari and Ryan Porteous at center back, with Sergi Palencia and Eddie Segura anchoring the fullback roles.

"It's a wonderful thing," Tafari said. "I am a center back. We don't always get the goals and more often than not, we definitely don't get the credit. It's mostly just the blame, so when it could come down to something like this, it's definitely a beautiful thing, at least getting the recognition."

LAFC's defensive excellence isn't solely due to limited opportunities for opposing teams either. Lloris's save tally places 12th among MLS goalkeepers and they have conceded 1.47 expected goals (xG) per match, sitting 20th.

Son Heung-min Seeking Form

Son Heung-min, LAFC

While LAFC have dominated defensively, the same cannot be said for Son Heung-min in attack. The South Korean star, expected by many to guide the team to success alongside Denis Bouanga, has now endured five MLS matches without finding the net, and once again appeared disconnected against Austin—especially when Brendan Hines-Ike recovered to deny the 33-year-old with a crucial intervention.

However, Son's veteran presence and overall impact has enabled teammates to thrive. David Martínez, the 20-year-old Venezuelan talent, has particularly impressed, reducing the scoring burden on the former Tottenham Hotspur skipper.

If past performance indicates future results, Son's expected to bounce back from his slow individual beginning, and LAFC will benefit from the return of Canada international midfielder Stephen Eustáquio, who was unavailable this week while recovering from a hematoma.

Tafari stated LAFC "absolutely want to be champions," and if the traditional saying that "defense wins titles" holds true, then they're certainly positioning themselves to achieve exactly that.
