Wrexham Boss Teases Major Transfer Bombshell As Window Races Toward Deadline

Wrexham chief executive Michael Williamson has suggested the club is looking to bring in a creative player during the final days of the summer transfer window.

The Red Dragons have brought in three new signings this summer, bolstering a squad that finished seventh in the Championship last season. Wrexham have shown promise in their first two games of the new season but have struggled to convert their control into victories, sharing the spoils with both Cardiff City and Watford.

Phil Parkinson's squad will receive a welcome boost with the return of last season's leading scorer Josh Windass when they welcome Birmingham City on Friday evening, while efforts continue to secure another attacking midfielder before the transfer deadline. Sports Illustrated understands Wrexham came close to agreeing a deal for Leeds United forward Joe Gelhardt before he chose to move to Premier League club Hull City, with interest also reported in Millwall's Femi Azeez.

Wrexham CEO Explains Transfer Plans

Williamson stressed that the priority was "quality over quantity" in the summer window, with Wrexham aiming to add more elite Championship talent before the deadline on Tuesday, September 1.

The Wrexham CEO also acknowledged that the standard of players they are pursuing has led to stiff competition from larger clubs.

"This year, going into the transfer market this summer, we said we are looking to add some quality, not quantity. We had the foundations of a really strong Championship squad, then we knew we needed to be competitive and make a little bit of a difference. We have been going after it, but I think what happens is the players we are going after are top-quality players. We are looking to make an impact," he told BBC Radio Wales.

"It has been great to bring in [Anthony] Patterson, [Danny] Imray and [Ben] Whiteman so far this summer. Those are quality, quality Championship players. For us, it is about finding that quality. There are a few more pieces we want to bring in, certainly, but we are competing with some big clubs out there."

When pressed on which clubs Wrexham were up against in the race for players, Williamson revealed that the competition stretches well beyond the Premier League and Championship.

"There are a few positions on the pitch we are looking to strengthen with quality, and what you are competing against isn't just the Premier League or top-end Championship clubs; it is clubs in the top five leagues around Europe. That is who Wrexham are today. We are looking to bring in not an average player, we are looking to bring in players that are being recruited at a top level across the top five leagues."

Williamson was then asked about fans' calls for Wrexham to add more firepower after the team failed to capitalise on their dominance in the opening two fixtures.

"I think there are probably 72 other clubs looking for the same shiny new striker. That's the challenging one to find — a striker who is great with his feet, great with his head, great at hold-up play, has finishing quality, is 6ft 5in [1.96 meters] and wants to move to Wrexham. That is your £40 million [$54.52m] striker right there!

"I think we have two great strikers on the pitch right now. Kieffer [Moore] had a great match on Monday; everyone saw last season what the quality of Sam Smith was at Championship level.

"We are pretty comfortable with those two up top. I think what we need is just to add a little bit of that quality and different pieces on the pitch just to be able to give them the opportunity to score more goals."
