Wrexham Breaks 43-Year Championship Drought with Historic Point Despite Dramatic Late Meltdown

Wrexham claimed their initial point of the Championship campaign with a 2–2 stalemate against Sheffield Wednesday, though the Red Dragons will feel disappointed not to have taken all three points.
Phil Parkinson's squad made an excellent beginning at the STōK Cae Ras on Saturday afternoon courtesy of an outstanding first-half display from Kieffer Moore. The forward put the home side ahead in the 15th minute before adding a second goal just 16 minutes afterward.
Wrexham entered the break holding a comfortable two-goal advantage, appearing set for their maiden triumph of the 2025–26 season. However, the Red Dragons surrendered their commanding position once more, allowing two second-half strikes while failing to respond.
The visiting fans' celebrations filled the venue as Bailey Cadamarteri netted the leveler for Sheffield Wednesday in the 81st minute, leaving the home supporters in disbelief throughout the ground.
Wrexham have now shipped seven goals across their first three Championship matches, with three arriving after the 80-minute mark.
Parkinson's team are finding it difficult to see out matches in England's second division, an issue they believe new acquisition Callum Doyle can help address. The ex-Manchester City center-back signed a four-year contract with the Welsh club valued at up to £7.5million ($10 million).
However, it will require more than a single player to put Wrexham's Championship season back on course. The team currently occupies 19th position with merely one point from three games. The Red Dragons endured a 2–1 loss to Southampton and a 3–2 defeat against West Brom prior to their 2–2 tie with Sheffield Wednesday.
The sole highlight for Wrexham this campaign occurred in the Carabao Cup, where they produced a remarkable late turnaround to knock out Hull City via penalty kicks.
The Red Dragons' upcoming opportunity to claim three Championship points arrives against Millwall on Saturday, Aug. 30. Before that fixture, Wrexham face Preston in the Carabao Cup second round on Tuesday, Aug. 28.
