Wrexham CEO Unveils Exciting Timeline for Stunning $95 Million Kop Stand Transformation

Wrexham chief executive Mike Williamson has confirmed that the club's new Kop Stand is on track to be fully operational ahead of the 2027–28 season.

The new 5,500-seat Kop Stand will return the Racecourse Ground to a four-sided stadium and could push the total capacity to just above 18,000, should a separate planning application to expand the stand to 7,500 seats receive approval.

The total cost of the stand is projected to be approximately $95 million, with Wrexham's share amounting to $67.62 million. The Red Dragons have already received a contentious $23.46 million grant from the Welsh government, which will assist the club in fulfilling the UEFA Category 4 criteria needed to bring competitive men's international fixtures back to Wrexham.

Wrexham remain hopeful that the stand will open in a limited capacity during the closing months of the 2026–27 season, though full completion of the new Kop Stand is not anticipated for another year after that.

"The plan is that the Kop will be open and fully operational in that August period for the 2027–28 season," Williamson told The Leader.

"We are working closely with the city and the contractors to explore whether, even with a limited number of seats, we can open it without the full suite of services or amenities the Kop will eventually offer, while still providing seats for fans to use during matches as early as possible.

"If we're lucky, perhaps that could happen in the February, March, or April window, which could be hugely significant for the club if we're pushing for the playoffs—allowing even a few hundred up to 1,000 fans to occupy those seats. But that's still not guaranteed—we're continuing to work through the details.

"That's what we're aiming for, and that's what we're working toward. Ultimately, though, we need to balance that against ensuring it doesn't compromise our ability to fully open in August 2027.

"That's the more critical milestone in the project. We need to ensure it is fully operational and firing on all cylinders for the start of that season.

"But if we can achieve that while also making a handful of seats available from match to match, then we'll certainly look to make that happen."

Wrexham fans will have noticed construction of the new Kop Stand picking up speed as work presses on throughout the summer.

Current efforts are focused on erecting the frame of the new stand, with crews building the skeleton of the upper tier before shifting attention to the lower tier.

Staircase work in both cores has now been finished, while the installation of precast terracing is set to continue over the weeks ahead.

Several thousand supporters got a closer look at the "imposing" new structure over the weekend as Wales fell to Spain in the opening game of the UEFA Men's Under-19 Championship at the Racecourse Ground.

Although construction remains in its early phases, it is already evident just how substantial the structure will be, with the new Kop Stand set to dominate the rest of the stadium at roughly twice the height of any other stand.
