Wrexham Crushed in Most Humiliating Loss of Their Star-Studded Hollywood Takeover

When Wrexham co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney urged supporters to "buckle up" for yet another "crazy" campaign, this was certainly not the scenario the Hollywood celebrities had envisioned.

It proved to be a catastrophic—if undeniably "crazy"—evening for Wrexham beneath the London lights. Phil Parkinson's side made the trip to the capital, a venue where they had gone unbeaten since their return to the EFL Championship (across eight fixtures), only to be demolished 6–0 by newly-relegated West Ham United.

Friday's contest represented a record defeat for the Red Dragons and Parkinson under their celebrity ownership, a pair who formally assumed control in 2021 before steering the then-National League outfit on a remarkable run of three back-to-back promotions (2022–23, 2023–24, 2024–25). Under the actors' stewardship, Wrexham had never previously suffered a six-goal defeat. The club's heaviest prior result had been a 5–0 defeat to Stockport County in September 2023 during EFL League Two action.

It has been a thoroughly disappointing start to the new campaign for a club that harbored genuine ambitions of a fourth-straight promotion to the Premier League just twelve months ago. Wrexham have secured only one win across their opening seven league outings, a 3–0 triumph over Millwall at The Den. They remain without a home victory and currently occupy 16th place in the Championship table.

Wrexham delivered a disjointed display against Burnley midweek, which perhaps served as an early warning sign of what would unfold far more brutally on Friday. Wrexham salvaged a 1–1 draw in that encounter, yet struggled to generate momentum and were lethargic without the ball. The same pattern emerged against West Ham, managing just a single shot on target and leaving West Ham goalkeeper Mads Hermansen with virtually nothing to do.

The Red Dragons have found goals hard to come by all season, failing to register more than a single goal in any outing outside of the Millwall win. They will be eager to reverse their fortunes—and quickly. Their next chance arrives on September 19 against Southampton at home at Racecourse Ground.
