Wrexham Face Crucial Schedule Battle Against Playoff Rivals Following Birmingham Setback

Wrexham's hopes of achieving a fourth straight promotion are gradually slipping away following a troubling run of poor results.

Despite a promising 2025–26 campaign upon their much-anticipated return to the EFL Championship, the Red Dragons have failed to win in five of their last seven outings, dropping out of the playoff positions with only four fixtures remaining.

Their latest setback, a 2–0 loss to Birmingham City, arrived just five days after Phil Parkinson's side were thrashed 5–1 by playoff contenders Southampton. Those two results, along with a hard-fought 2–2 draw against West Brom, have left Wales' oldest club without a victory since the international break.

Wrexham's Premier League aspirations depend on rediscovering their winning form, yet even that may not be sufficient to claw back into the playoff spots. The club will also need their closest rivals to drop points in their remaining games.

Wrexham currently sit in seventh position, accumulating 64 points from 42 matches. With so little of the season remaining, claiming sixth place appears to be the Red Dragons' only realistic route into the playoffs.

Blocking their path are Southampton, Hull City, and Derby County. Realistically, Southampton are beyond reach on 69 points in fifth, particularly given they still hold a game in hand.

Hull City, however, have played the same number of games as Parkinson's side and sit just four points clear in sixth. Wrexham would need a flawless run to even dream of overtaking the Tigers, while Derby County are also lurking dangerously close behind.

The eighth-placed side trails the Welsh club by just a single point, meaning any further slip from Wrexham could allow Derby to leapfrog them in the table and effectively end their playoff ambitions.

Among the three clubs battling for sixth place, Wrexham face the most demanding run-in. The Red Dragons must first take on Stoke City, a side that already got the better of them back in October.

After what might seem like a manageable trip against relegation-threatened Oxford United, Parkinson's men then face table-toppers Coventry City and fourth-placed Middlesbrough to wrap up their campaign — two daunting opponents for a side that cannot afford to drop a single point.

Hull City also have some challenging games ahead, though their remaining schedule is considerably less daunting than Wrexham's. First up is a stubborn Birmingham side that the Tigers have managed to beat just once in their last four encounters across all competitions.

Doomed Leicester City and 18th-placed Charlton should present minimal resistance, before Hull round off their season against Norwich City. Sergej Jakirović's side will benefit from home advantage in a match that could prove decisive in determining whether they hold onto sixth place.

Derby also face a potentially tricky encounter with Norwich remaining on their schedule, but beyond that, their path looks relatively straightforward. Oxford United and Sheffield United both sit in the lower half of the table, while QPR have been far from reliable this season.
