Wrexham Icon Opens Up on Shocking Exit Despite Pivotal Role in Club's Historic Takeover

Humphrey Ker has described his surprising departure from Wrexham as a "complicated" matter, but one he ultimately felt compelled to go through with.

Ker stepped down from the club's board and his position as a trustee of the Wrexham AFC Foundation last month, concluding his official five-year connection with the club. The 43-year-old was instrumental in the Red Dragons' ascent, originally sparking Rob McElhenney's interest in the sport and compiling a shortlist of potential clubs to acquire.

Ker subsequently became McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds's representative on the ground throughout the takeover process, putting his comedy career on pause as the Hollywood pair set about overhauling the former National League side. The British actor swiftly became a beloved figure in the local community and is famously credited with persuading the owners to spend big on legendary forward Paul Mullin.

Ker believes the club's evolving structure made it increasingly difficult for him to contribute meaningfully, with his influence waning following Wrexham's promotion to the EFL Championship.

Despite being well-regarded by the fanbase, Ker gradually withdrew from the boardroom as the club brought in several other prominent figures and transformed from a community outfit into a worldwide sensation.

"It's a bit complicated, but it was something that I just felt I had to do," he told The Leader regarding his decision to leave. "Not necessarily because of other things in my life, but I am excited to see what happens in the future.

"I thoroughly enjoyed my six years at Wrexham. I will be watching on closely from further afield and wish everybody at the club all the best. I am not quite sure when I will next be there, but I will definitely be coming back when I can."

Ker departs at a pivotal moment as Wrexham look to cement their place among the Championship's top sides and push for Premier League promotion. Following three back-to-back promotions, the final hurdle is likely to prove the most challenging, though Ker remains confident the club will realise their ambitious goals under McElhenney and Reynolds.

He added: "Rob and Ryan are committed to do this for a long time. All the ingredients that made us successful before are still there and hopefully they will bear fruit as they have done over the last five years.

"It couldn't have gone any better, really. Genuinely, when we started out, I don't think we ever expected to have got to where we have now. But I am very glad we have got to where we have got to. I think it is an achievement to be proud of."
