Wrexham Join Fierce Battle to Land Liverpool's Star Winger

Wrexham have allegedly entered the race alongside Birmingham City and Sheffield United to secure 19-year-old Liverpool striker Lewis Koumas.

Although the Red Dragons brought in nine new signings during the summer window, they've endured a difficult beginning to their inaugural Championship season in over four decades. Phil Parkinson's squad currently occupies 19th position following devastating defeats in their first two league fixtures.

Wrexham continues to explore transfer opportunities for reinforcements. The Welsh club is nearing completion of an agreement valued at up to £8 million ($10.7 million) for Manchester City youth product Callum Doyle. They're also targeting another talented youngster with top-flight connections.

The Athletic initially broke the news of Wrexham's pursuit of Koumas, who attracted multiple clubs' attention following his impressive temporary spell at Stoke City during the previous campaign.

The Red Dragons face significant competition for the Liverpool prospect's services, however. The Liverpool ECHO reports that Birmingham and Sheffield United are equally interested in securing the winger's signature.

Lewis Koumas

Koumas progressed through Liverpool's youth system before making his first-team bow in the Reds' FA Cup victory against Southampton in February of the previous year. The attacker netted the decisive goal at Anfield, creating an unforgettable debut moment.

The Welsh international ultimately couldn't establish himself in the senior squad, however, and instead spent the 2024–25 campaign on loan in England's second division. Koumas featured in 49 matches for Stoke City, contributing six goals and three assists during his stint.

His Championship experience makes him particularly attractive to clubs like Wrexham and Birmingham. Both teams competed in League One last season, claiming the top two positions to earn direct promotion to England's second tier.

The two clubs won't meet in their next "Hollywood derby" until Oct. 3, but their developing rivalry could intensify before the transfer deadline closes on Sept. 1.

Koumas's Liverpool future remains uncertain pending any potential transfer agreement. The teenager featured in just two of the Reds' preseason matches, accumulating 57 minutes total. He appears poised to become another young academy product departing Merseyside this summer, joining Ben Doak, Jarell Quansah and Tyler Morton.
