Wrexham Land England International in Blockbuster Signing That Has Fans 'Over the Moon'

Wrexham have confirmed the acquisition of former England defender Conor Coady as part of their unprecedented summer spending spree for the Welsh club.

Following their surprise promotion to the Championship, England's second division, during the previous campaign, the Dragons have initiated a comprehensive squad rebuild. The club's spending record has been shattered on two occasions already, initially through Liberato Cacace's arrival from Empoli (£2.2 million, $2.9 million) before Lewis O'Brien's £3 million ($4 million) transfer surpassed that figure. A failed pursuit of former Manchester United playmaker Christian Eriksen demonstrated Wrexham's lofty aspirations.

Coady's move from Leicester City, who suffered relegation from the Premier League last term, is anticipated to cost £2 million ($2.6 million).

"I'm absolutely thrilled," the central defender told club media. "This is a momentous occasion, to be completely honest. Everyone has witnessed the club's progress in recent years and being part of this journey is truly remarkable - I'm eager to meet my teammates and begin training."

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson commented: "We're thrilled to bring Conor into our setup. He possesses valuable Premier League and Championship experience and will strengthen our squad significantly."

Coady has claimed the Championship crown on two occasions. Following his defensive duties in Nuno Espírito Santo's celebrated Wolverhampton Wanderers team that dominated the division in 2018, the 32-year-old assisted Leicester's return to England's elite level in 2023–24. Coady made 22 appearances for the Foxes during their relegation campaign last season.

Matty James and James McClean remain the sole current squad members with more Championship experience than the seasoned Coady.

Wrexham's summer signings have combined veteran professionals nearing career twilight, like Coady, with promising young prospects. 27-year-old Welsh forward Nathan Broadhead represents a middle ground between these categories and is rumored to be the club's next target. BBC Sport reports that the Ipswich Town striker would require a £7.5 million ($9.9 million) fee, exceeding O'Brien's current record by more than double.
