Wrexham Makes Bold Move, Recruits Ex-Rival Star Midfielder for Championship Campaign

Wrexham have secured a deal to bring in Bolton Wanderers midfielder George Thomason, completing their fourth acquisition of the summer transfer period.

As Wrexham prepare for their inaugural Championship season in over four decades with just under three weeks remaining, the Red Dragons continue to make notable additions during the summer window. The Welsh side has already brought in ex-Liverpool keeper Danny Ward and Plymouth Argyle striker Ryan Hardie, while also completing a record-breaking €2.5million (£2.2 million; $2.9 million) move for Liberato Cacace.

The club has now secured another addition to their squad. Thomason has committed to a three-year deal with Wales' oldest football club, tying him to the red jersey through the conclusion of the 2027–28 campaign. Reports from The Athletic indicate that Bolton and Wrexham settled on a transfer fee of approximately £1.2 million ($1.62m) for the 24-year-old midfielder.

The England-born player, who served as Bolton's captain during the previous campaign, accumulated 169 matches for the Trotters across his five seasons at the club. Thomason played a key role in helping the team earn promotion from League Two in 2021 and was instrumental in Bolton's EFL Trophy victory two seasons ago.

The newly acquired midfielder previously faced Wrexham while leading Bolton in League One encounters last term. Both fixtures between these clubs concluded without goals being scored.

"I'm thrilled to join this club and eager to become part of the incredible journey they've been experiencing," Thomason commented. "This represents an incredibly exciting period for the football club, and the upcoming season promises to be truly special."

Wrexham are building on their remarkable achievement of three straight promotions. The Red Dragons claimed second place in their 2024–25 League One season, securing direct qualification to the Championship for the coming campaign.

The Emmy-winning documentary series Welcome to Wrexham has documented the team's remarkable rise from the National League through to the Championship level. Joint owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have consistently expressed their ambition to eventually guide the Red Dragons into the Premier League.

"We're thrilled to bring George into our squad," stated manager Phil Parkinson. "We're excited to have him join training with the team this week and become fully integrated with the group."
