Wrexham Poised to Shatter Club Transfer Record with Serie A Star Signing

Wrexham have allegedly finalized an agreement for Empoli's Liberato Cacace in what is believed to be a record-breaking transfer fee for the club.

Following their achievement of a third consecutive promotion, the Red Dragons are preparing for their inaugural EFL Championship season in 43 years. The heightened level of competition facing Wrexham led the club to implement numerous significant modifications this summer, including the departure of eight players.

Wales' most historic club said goodbye to Steven Fletcher, Mark Howard, Jordan Davies, Sam Dalby and four youth academy players in May. Beloved striker Paul Mullin will also miss the Red Dragons' second-division campaign after moving to Wigan Athletic on a temporary deal.

These exits created opportunities for the club to acquire former Liverpool keeper Danny Ward and Plymouth Argyle striker Ryan Hardie. Wrexham have now identified their subsequent target.

Based on reports from Italian sports journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Cacace is traveling to Wales for a record club fee of €2.5 million (£2.2 million; $2.9 million), including additional payments. The move, which is allegedly a "completed transaction", will see the 24-year-old permanently transfer to Wrexham before the 2025–26 campaign.

This amount surpasses the former club record established by Sam Smith's €2.4 million (£2.1 million; $2.8 million) acquisition from Reading earlier this year. The forward was crucial in Wrexham's runner-up League One campaign, scoring seven times in 19 matches.

Wrexham will anticipate that Cacace's acquisition proves as beneficial as Smith's signing. The New Zealand representative is an adaptable player capable of performing in multiple positions across the field. Cacace has operated as an offensive midfielder, left wing-back, left defender and even central defender throughout his appearances for club and national team.

During three-and-a-half campaigns at Empoli, Cacace accumulated 93 matches in all tournaments. The 24-year-old was a regular starter for the Italian team last season, though he couldn't help the Serie A side avoid demotion.
