Wrexham Set to Land Man City Defender in Blockbuster £8 Million Swoop

Wrexham are said to be close to securing a transfer for Manchester City youth product Callum Doyle to join their Welsh outfit.

The Red Dragons have invested heavily in assembling a roster ready to compete in the EFL Championship. Already this summer, nine new signings have arrived at Wrexham, highlighted by Nathan Broadhead's club-record £7.5 million ($10.1 million) acquisition.

However, Phil Parkinson's squad has dropped both opening fixtures in the second division, suffering late collapses versus Southampton and West Brom. Wrexham allowed five goals across these two matches, plus three more in their Carabao Cup triumph over Hull City.

The club clearly requires defensive additions, which is where Doyle enters the picture. Per The Athletic, the 21-year-old is poised to sign with Wrexham in a transfer valued at up to £8 million. Should this move materialize, the Reynolds and McElhenney-owned side will have the Championship's highest summer spending.

Doyle had also attracted attention from Sheffield United and Rangers, though Wrexham appears to have prevailed. Geography allegedly influenced the Manchester-born player's decision.

The defender progressed through Manchester City's youth system but never earned a senior team opportunity. Rather, Doyle has spent four seasons on temporary moves to Sunderland, Coventry City, Leicester City, and most recently Norwich City.

Though still young, Doyle possesses substantial Championship knowledge for Wrexham. During the previous campaign, he featured in 40 second-tier matches for Norwich City, finishing the 2024–25 season with one goal and seven assists.

While center-back remains his primary role, he can also operate down the left side. Doyle's adaptability will provide valuable depth for a Wrexham team struggling to secure results and inject creativity into their offensive play.

The Red Dragons aim to have the Manchester City graduate wearing red when they face Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, Aug. 23.
