Wrexham Shake Up Their Boardroom as Exciting New Appointment Looms

Wrexham have confirmed two boardroom changes at the Racecourse Ground in the club's latest round of structural reshuffling.

The Red Dragons announced that Elis Wyn Jones is set to join the club's board as a director, pending approval from both the Independent Football Regulator (IFR) and the English Football League (EFL). Jones brings a wealth of experience in sports finance, having previously held the position of Head of Global Sports Advisory and European Gaming Sector Coverage at Goldman Sachs.

The second change involves Shaun Harvey formally transitioning into a non-executive director role. He has been appointed on an initial three-year term and will concentrate solely on board-level matters moving forward. Sports Illustrated reported earlier this summer that Harvey would no longer oversee the club's transfer activity, with chief executive Michael Williamson assuming responsibility for player recruitment.

What Does It Mean for Wrexham?

Wrexham are hopeful that these latest changes will improve decision-making efficiency and allow key figures within the club to concentrate more fully on their individual areas of responsibility.

The announcements come just ahead of Steve Nickson's appointment as Wrexham's first-ever sporting director next week, with the 61-year-old due to officially take up the role on Sep. 2. Nickson currently serves as head of recruitment at Premier League side Newcastle United, a post he has held for the last nine years. He also holds a master's degree in sports directorship from the University of Salford.

Nickson will be responsible for overseeing Wrexham's sporting strategy and will serve as the bridge between the boardroom and the first-team coaching staff. He will work alongside manager Phil Parkinson on a day-to-day basis while maintaining communication with club executives acting on behalf of Rob Mac and Ryan Reynolds.

This means he will also develop a close working relationship with Williamson, who has spearheaded Wrexham's transfer dealings throughout the summer.

The sporting director will take charge of player recruitment, contract negotiations and the club's long-term sporting vision, ensuring that Wrexham's broader objectives are carried out across the football department. Nickson will also play a significant part in managerial decisions, including assessing whether a coaching change is necessary and potentially leading any subsequent search for a new appointment.

Nickson's arrival could also indicate a shift in the balance of authority over sporting matters at the club. Parkinson will remain a central figure in football operations and continue to have considerable influence, though he may no longer hold ultimate authority over major sporting decisions.

It is worth emphasising that there is absolutely no suggestion that Parkinson's position is at risk. However, decisions regarding his future will now likely be guided by Nickson and Williamson rather than Harvey, who played an instrumental role in bringing the 58-year-old to Wrexham.
