Wrexham Shatter 162 Years of History With Stunning Stoke City Triumph

Wrexham etched their name in the record books with a 2–0 victory over Stoke City in the EFL Championship on Saturday, mathematically locking in the best league finish in the club's history.

Josh Windass netted a brace in the opening half to keep the Red Dragons in seventh place and trim Hull City's lead to just two points in the battle for a playoff spot.

Phil Parkinson's squad have three games remaining in the Championship campaign but now carry fresh optimism about cracking the top six, which would earn them a playoff berth and a potential pathway to the Premier League next term.

Wrexham have been keen to emphasize that this season has been an unqualified success regardless of the final outcome, and that sentiment was reinforced with their latest result. The three points claimed against Stoke City have already secured the highest league finish in the club's 162-year existence.

Wrexham have narrowed the gap on Hull City as they chase a playoff place in the EFL Championship.

Parkinson's men sit seventh, two points adrift of the Tigers with only three regular-season fixtures remaining. Derby County trail Wrexham by a single point and are just three points away from the playoff zone themselves.

The Red Dragons are determined to finish as high as possible and will leave everything on the pitch across the final three games, though there is already more than enough reason to celebrate what has been an outstanding season.

Thanks to their latest triumph, Wrexham have guaranteed that the 2025–26 campaign will go down as the club's finest league finish in their 162-year history. Regardless of how the remaining three matches unfold, the Red Dragons will end the season in the top half of the Championship.

Wrexham's previous benchmark was a 15th-place finish in the old Second Division (now the EFL Championship) during the 1978–79 season. It is worth noting that this was achieved when the old First Division (now the Premier League) contained 22 clubs, meaning they actually ranked 37th in the English football pyramid at the time. This season, the worst they can place is 31st across the top two divisions.

This record-breaking league finish represents the latest milestone in the Welsh club's extraordinary ascent since Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds completed their takeover in February 2021.

For perspective, on the very day the acquisition was finalized, Wrexham beat Altrincham FC 2–1 to move up to seventh in the National League — and 99th in the English football pyramid.
