Wrexham have finalized the acquisition of Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson for a club-record initial transfer fee on a four-year contract.
While the exact figure was not officially disclosed by either club, Sports Illustrated has learned that the Red Dragons will pay a club-record £8 million ($10.8 million) upfront, with a number of performance-based add-ons also included. Wrexham's previous transfer record was the £7.5 million ($10.1 million) spent on Nathan Broadhead from Ipswich Town last summer, though that deal could ultimately surpass Patterson's total package in value.
Patterson was instrumental in Sunderland's promotion from the Championship two seasons ago but lost his place in the squad following the club's return to the Premier League. The 26-year-old moved to Millwall on loan during the January transfer window and made 14 appearances as the Lions advanced to the playoffs.
He becomes the Welsh club's third addition of the summer transfer window, following the signings of Crystal Palace defender Danny Imray and Preston North End midfielder Ben Whiteman.
Patterson and Parkinson React to Transfer
Speaking after his transfer to Wrexham was confirmed, Patterson said: "Wrexham really suits me in terms of what I want to achieve in my career, so it feels like the ideal fit.
"I've followed the journey the club has been on, and it's genuinely exciting to now be a part of it. I want to play in the Premier League with Wrexham, and I believe everything is in place for the club to make that happen. I'm really looking forward to playing in front of our supporters, climbing the league and getting this football club to where it belongs."
Parkinson had been keen to bring in a new first-choice goalkeeper throughout the summer, with early discussions over a move for Patterson beginning at the start of the transfer window.
The Wrexham manager added: "We're thrilled to welcome Anthony to the football club. He's a young keeper, but with considerable experience at Championship level, and we're looking forward to working with him."
What Does Patterson's Move Mean for Okonkwo and Ward?
Patterson's arrival looks set to signal the departure of at least one of Wrexham's current goalkeepers.
Arthur Okonkwo is a crowd favourite, having been central to two consecutive promotions from League Two, while the seasoned Danny Ward was brought in as the club's first-choice goalkeeper a year ago. Parkinson also holds third-choice goalkeeper Callum Burton in high regard, with the shot-stopper having been at the club for two years.
Nevertheless, Patterson has been recruited to serve as Wrexham's new No. 1 and is considered an improvement on the goalkeepers currently on the books.
The former Sunderland goalkeeper is widely regarded as an outstanding shot-stopper, recording a 73.9% save percentage last season — a figure higher than both Okonkwo (67.9%) and Ward (67.6%).
Patterson also outperformed both Wrexham goalkeepers in terms of goals prevented. He kept out 1.08 more goals than expected across his 14 Championship appearances, while Okonkwo conceded 2.09 more goals than expected based on xGOT. Ward, meanwhile, prevented 0.18 goals across his eight league outings.
The 26-year-old also recorded more sweeper-keeper actions than any of Wrexham's goalkeepers last season, though he is less dominant in aerial situations than either Okonkwo or Ward.
When it comes to the core ability of keeping the ball out of the net, however, Patterson is the goalkeeper Wrexham rate most highly. He is now expected to be entrusted as the club's regular No. 1 when the new season kicks off.
