Wrexham Shatter Nearly Five-Decade Drought with Stunning Carabao Cup Victory
Wrexham have secured their place in the Carabao Cup fourth round for the first time since the 1977–78 season.
The Welsh club endured a challenging start to the 2025–26 campaign, managing only two victories in their opening seven fixtures across all competitions. Phil Parkinson's restructured team transitioned from a memorable League One season to finding themselves at the foot of the Championship table in just three months.
However, Wrexham are gradually building momentum, particularly in the Carabao Cup. Following a thrilling late rally and penalty shootout triumph over Hull City in round one, Wales' oldest football club proceeded to overcome Preston North End 3–2 in the second round before facing Reading in their quest for a last 16 berth.
Both teams failed to break the deadlock at the STōK Cae Ras during the opening 45 minutes, but Nathan Broadhead eventually broke the stalemate for the home side in the 57th minute. The Welsh forward delivered a brilliant curled strike, marking his inaugural goal in Wrexham colors.
Broadhead quickly doubled his tally just 13 minutes later. The recent acquisition nodded home a precise cross from Ryan Barnett to extend Wrexham's advantage to 2–0.
Reading were unable to respond to Broadhead's double strike, concluding the match empty-handed despite registering 11 attempts on Callum Burton's goal. As the referee's whistle brought proceedings to a close, Noel Hunt's team exited the Carabao Cup while Wrexham celebrated their significant achievement.
The Red Dragons have now reached the Carabao Cup fourth round for the first time in 48 years. If Parkinson's squad can triumph in their upcoming fixture and progress to the quarterfinals, they will equal their greatest ever performance in this tournament.
Before Wrexham can focus on future prospects, they must redirect their focus to their Championship duties. The Welsh side will aim to secure three consecutive victories when they meet Derby County on Saturday, Sept. 27.
