Wrexham forward Josh Windass has demanded that the Championship playoffs be restarted following Southampton's expulsion from the competition.
The Saints placed fourth in the standings and eliminated Middlesbrough over a two-legged semifinal, but have been barred from participating in the final after admitting to spying on three clubs throughout the Championship campaign. Tonda Eckert's squad confessed to "multiple breaches of EFL regulations related to the unauthorized filming of other clubs' training." The violations involve regular league fixtures against Oxford United in December 2025, Ipswich Town in April 2026, and a playoff semifinal against Middlesbrough in May 2026.
The EFL charged Southampton with violating two rules: EFL Regulation 3.4, which obliges clubs to deal with one another in complete good faith, and EFL Regulation 127, which forbids any club from monitoring, or attempting to monitor, another club's training session within 72 hours of a scheduled fixture between the two sides.
Currently, Middlesbrough have been restored to the playoffs and are set to face Hull City at Wembley Stadium for a Premier League spot this weekend. However, that situation may shift again, as Southampton plan to formally appeal the ruling on Wednesday, arguing that the sanction is excessive.
In addition to their playoff expulsion, the South Coast outfit has also been handed a four-point deduction heading into next season.
Windass Calls for Playoffs to Be Replayed

Wrexham were denied a playoff berth on the final day of the season after drawing 2–2 with Middlesbrough. That result left the Red Dragons in seventh place, two points adrift of Hull City in the last available playoff spot.
Despite it being the finest finish in the club's 162-year history, there was still heartbreak at falling just short on the final day and missing out on a fourth consecutive promotion and a chance at the Premier League.
Wrexham are waiting to learn the outcome of Southampton's appeal before deciding whether to pursue legal action, though star forward Windass has already publicly called for the playoffs to be rerun.
The 32-year-old argues that if Southampton were removed from the playoffs entirely rather than simply forced to forfeit their results, the next club in the standings should take their place — which would be Wrexham.
Posting on Instagram on Tuesday, the club's Player of the Year wrote on his story: "This Southampton story is one of the maddest I've seen. But why aren't the playoffs starting again with the four other teams? Boro v Hull would've been the semi!! Confused."
Should Windass get his way, Wrexham would take on Millwall in a playoff semifinal, with the victors meeting either Hull City or Middlesbrough in the grand final. There is currently no indication that the EFL is even considering this as a possibility.
The Championship playoff final is widely regarded as the most lucrative single match in world soccer, with the winning club estimated to gain around $267 million in additional revenue.
