Josh Windass has jokingly admitted to feeling "disappointed" after failing to secure a spot in England's World Cup squad.
The 32-year-old had an impressive personal season in North Wales, yet it wasn't sufficient to earn him a berth in Thomas Tuchel's summer squad. Windass wrapped up the campaign as Wrexham's leading scorer and claimed the club's Player of the Season award, having netted 16 goals and contributed 7 assists across all competitions.
Windass cemented his status as a pivotal figure at Wrexham after arriving from Sheffield Wednesday on a free transfer last summer, following the mutual termination of his previous deal. The seasoned attacking midfielder has built a solid career throughout the English football pyramid, yet has never earned a senior or youth international cap for his country.
Windass Reacts to England World Cup Squad
Windass turned to social media to share a lighthearted response following Friday's England squad announcement, while also sending his best wishes to the team ahead of this summer's tournament.
Since the turn of the millennium, just six players have been called up to represent England at senior level while competing in the second tier, three of whom were goalkeepers. The most recent outfield player to achieve this was Wilfried Zaha, who received a call-up in 2012 as a Crystal Palace player. He appeared in two friendly games before opting to represent Côte d'Ivoire in 2016.
Wrexham's Windass would have needed to deliver an extraordinary level of performance to earn a surprise first senior call-up at 32 for a major international tournament. That didn't prevent him from entertaining the thought, however.
In an Instagram post, Windass shared an edited photo of himself donning the England No. 10 shirt, accompanied by the tongue-in-cheek caption: "Disappointed to say the least," followed by a crying face emoji and the England flag emoji. "Good luck, lads."
Will Any Wrexham Players Be at the World Cup?
While Windass may have missed out on England's World Cup squad this summer, two of his Wrexham teammates will be featuring in the tournament.
Liberato Cacace has been included in New Zealand's squad for the competition, and club captain Dom Hyam has earned a place in Scotland's squad. The All Whites have been placed in Group G alongside Iran, Egypt and Belgium, while the Tartan Army find themselves in Group C alongside Haiti, Morocco and Brazil.
Dennis Lawrence remains the only former Wrexham player to have appeared in the tournament while still contracted to the club, having represented Trinidad & Tobago at the 2006 edition held in Germany.
