Wrexham Star Throws Down in Heated Parking Lot Brawl With Rival Supporter
Wrexham midfielder James McClean has confessed to striking a Cardiff City supporter before the Red Dragons' recent Carabao Cup encounter with their bitter rivals.
Very little went according to plan for Phil Parkinson's squad at the STōK Cae Ras on Tuesday, Oct. 28. A disappointing opening 45 minutes from the home side proved decisive in what became a 2–1 loss to an underdog Cardiff team, bringing Wrexham's Carabao Cup journey to an end.
Even before the match between north and south Wales commenced, McClean found himself involved in a confrontation with a group of opposing supporters. The midfielder revealed to talkSPORT that he "approached" four Cardiff fans in the car park before throwing a punch at one individual.
"There happened to be four male Cardiff supporters, also in their late 20s, early 30s. They spotted me, [and] instantly began verbally abusing me. I disregarded the initial comment. The second time, I replied, and I challenged them about it," McClean stated.
"Exchanges occurred. One individual, a tall man wearing glasses, made an aggressive gesture toward me... I'm at my place of work and I believe I should never feel intimidated in that environment.
"Therefore, I wasn't going to wait for him to strike first. So I acted. Four individuals, just me."
McClean remained on the bench during Wrexham's loss to Cardiff and also in last weekend's exciting win over Coventry. The 36-year-old was omitted from Parkinson's lineup against Portsmouth on Wednesday night, which concluded in a scoreless tie, leaving Wrexham 14th in the EFL Championship after securing only four victories from 14 matches since their return to the second division.
"Individuals must realize that just because we're footballers doesn't mean people can attempt to take advantage without facing repercussions for their behavior," McClean continued.
"That concluded it. Nothing else occurred. And the matter was resolved. I trust that clarifies things."
Wrexham Issue Statement Regarding McClean Situation

Following McClean's admission of his role in the car park incident, a representative from Wrexham issued a statement addressing the situation.
"Wrexham AFC acknowledges an incident involving a first-team player and a visiting fan prior to our fixture against Cardiff City, which has been reported to the appropriate authorities," the club representative informed Daily Mail Sport.
"We will not be providing any additional comments on this matter at present."
