Wrexham are set to take on Wigan Athletic in a closed-doors friendly next week, providing Phil Parkinson's squad with one last chance to sharpen their match sharpness ahead of the upcoming Championship campaign.
The Red Dragons returned home from their U.S. preseason tour on Sunday evening following a 1–0 loss to Sunderland in Philadelphia. Parkinson will bring his players back into training during the week before Wrexham head to Middlesbrough for their Carabao Cup first-round clash on Friday night.
While the visit to the Riverside Stadium signals the start of competitive action, Parkinson has already suggested he will approach the game as an extended preseason outing. Wrexham's main focus remains the Championship, with the club aiming to hit the ground running when they travel to Cardiff City on Monday, Aug. 17.
Wrexham are likely to name a rotated squad against Middlesbrough, with a number of players then expected to earn additional game time against Wigan the following Monday.
Wrexham Add Important Friendly to Schedule
Speaking in the aftermath of Sunday's loss to Sunderland at Subaru Park, Parkinson shared details about the forthcoming friendly against League One outfit Wigan Athletic.
"Taking everything into consideration with all the traveling involved, the lads have been absolutely brilliant; they really have," he told the club's official media. "They have thrown themselves into every session, they have been fantastic when engaging with the communities we've visited, and they have done their club proud.
"We head back now. Middlesbrough on Friday and then we face Wigan on Monday. The Friday fixture is the Carabao Cup, but the Wigan match carries a lot of significance too, because we need to ensure that, as we go into the week of the Cardiff game, we have another solid block of minutes in the lads' legs."
Parkinson Verdict on Preseason
Wrexham remained undefeated across their opening three preseason outings, drawing with Wisła Kraków before recording victories over Manchester United and Leeds United. The Red Dragons then suffered back-to-back narrow losses to Liverpool and Sunderland to conclude their official preseason programme.
Reflecting on the club's third tour of the United States, Parkinson commented: "All things considered, it has been a positive tour for us. We have genuinely enjoyed it. Kicking things off in Tampa, it was a really entertaining game against Leeds. We came out on the losing side in two games against Liverpool and Sunderland, but it certainly wasn't through a lack of effort.
"We produced some good moments throughout the games. The first half today was tough. It was breezy, the pitch felt a little heavy, and the game was fairly sluggish. In the second half, we ramped up our pressing and created chances to get back into it. We came through the tour with minimal injuries, the lads accumulated plenty of minutes, and we return to Wrexham in a positive frame of mind."
